Air box seals

Post by mpgscott »

Hi All,

On investigating another problem that Benny kindly helped identify i ended up having to remove the air filter, on doing so i can see that none of the two seals are fitted between the two halfs and the filter. Can this make a big difference especially to the low down smoothness of the bikes running? Anyone any experience of running without them is there a reason for not having them fitted?

Cheers
Mark

I don't remember any seals. The filter element has a raised lip on both sides and that fits into the groove in both halfs of the air box. No seals

Was just looking at: http://www.hondaoriginalparts.com/honda ... ck_03=6087 and it shows two seals part number 17222-MBB-300 but if you arnt running with them then it cant be a problem. Mind coughs and splutters below 4K so just trying to rule things out.

Cheers for response though.

Well they are on that parts diagam for sure! They must live in the grooves in the 2 halfs, but well hidden and don't fall out, or I would have noticed!

So have a close look, or a prod with a screwdriver to see if you have some

That was my thoughts AMcQ so i had a good look and mine are definitely missing.

Do you reckon this could cause issues?

I dont think any leakage past the air filter element could cause a misfire or fueling issue, the gaps must be pretty small, and the interlocking shape makes a labirynth seal. only leakage below the carbs would get me worried.

If you were worried you could smear a bit of grease onto the mating parts and that will stop any small leaks and dirt getting in....silicon would be better but getting the lid off would be a nightmare!

Sounds like you've put the vacuum pipe on the wrong part of the fuel tap.

The pipe that runs from the carb to teh fuel tap doesn't go on to the bottom of the fuel tap, it goes around the back (which you can't see and therefore automatically assume it goes on to the bottom).

Lift the tank and check the pipe position. Remove it and push it on the back of the tap... it's fiddly, but it won't run without it attached to the wrong place....

Mine now seems to be running fine Gilson, not sure what you were meaning with regards the fuel pipe?

Sorry Gilson i was being a numpty and didnt read your post correctly.

So the vacum pipe can cause the bike to run poorly if connected wrongly. I will have a gander in the haynes manual and see if i can suss the routing you are describing.

First time I have heard of seals in a VTR airbox..... none in mine that much I am certain of (and God knows I have had the airbox apart surely over a hundred times....)

Samey same- never seen any fitted, seen many airboxes.
If you're worried about it, a smear of silicon sealant will do the trick, but I can't imagine that you'd notice difference at all.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
