Hows that for a vague topic?

I've seen a device fitted to many bikes, which I assume is some kind of disc lock, with an integrated alarm.

Are they any good? I'm not sure what they are called. Tried searching disc locks but couldnt find anything similar.

Disc lock is good portable security, which may make Mr tealeaf look at the next bike without one. They do come with alarms as well, however who pays attention to alarms? the curly lead is there to remind you the disc lock is there and stop you attempting to ride off and coming to an undignified end!

Thanks Kev. I feel a bit erm, dumb now...

I even owned a disc lock once upon a time. Rode off with it on...monkey metal...it snapped and didnt even bend my front disc. This was on a DT125..!

Never had a new fangled curly thing though...

Curly lead over the front brake lever/throttle is meant to act as a visible reminder to prevent that kind of disc/fork/lock interface. The leads are about £2.00 from motrax dealers, a lot cheaper than a new disc. As an alternative they used to make something similar to a large plastic, coloured drawing pin, the needle of which went into the ignition switch when the disc lock was on. Haven't seen those advertised recently though.

Just to add to whats said above. I have a disk lock without an alarm. The bike has an alarm and if they are that intent on trying to get the bike then an extra alarm will do bugger all.

I use the green curly thing to remind me because like most people that own a disk lock I have been caught out and attempted to ride away without removing it. Luckily enough no damage was done but worst case is a bent brake disk and a dropped bike.

Another point to make is make sure you put the disk as close to the brake caliper as you can. That way the bike wont move very far if you do happen to forget.

Otherwise you do what I did - large handful of throttle on my 7r, the wheel got nearly a full rotation before I was quite literally, catapulted off the bike....

....in front of all my staff, indicator and fairing cracked - easily repaired, reputation in tatters - that I will never recover!

I have a curly thing too - placed over the throttle grip!

Oh, and look for Xena for disk locks with alarms...

Or uber cheapskate version, a clothes peg clipped to the screen or a lever as a reminder! Not my idea but I do know they clip to the throttle cables and stay put at 120mph

I use a Xena disc alarm, which comes with a little carry pouch.
When I use it I put my bike ignition keys back in the empty pouch, and that way always remember to take it off again before riding away.

You can do the same with the big heavy Oxford Boss disc shackle alarm, which i use for other people's bikes while I have them in for repairs or work.

Why not get a quote for it to be delivered?

Several people have had their bike vanned in, then ridden it away once sorted.

I thought about that mate, its about £100 quid each way. I think it'd use maybe 2 full tanks if I rode it back. The cost would work out to be around the same I guess.
