Help with my bike, please.

Post by Rad_Draven »

Hi to all. Please, I desperatelly need some help with my bike. 6 months ago I had a terrible breakdown, you all know, the front CCT failed and the piston broke the valves and all the stuff. I'm sure that you know this as good as me.

So after paying 1.500euros I fixed the bike, and a couple of weeks ago I noticed some diferent sound in my bike, I think is the chain (the one inside the engine) so I orderer two manual cam chains tensioner to put in my bike. Yesterday I went to my mechanic and he told me that the manual CCT can cause problems in the engine, specially in the "patín" (Sorry, I dont know the word in english, is the plastic piece that the CCT pushes against the chain).

So what should I do? Put the manual CCTS? Leave the bike as it is now?

Ah! I forgot to mention that my mechanic told me that he put some news CCTs, original from honda, but with another serial number. This maybe because Honda noticed the problem and fixed it in the new CCT.

Thanks for your help :)

Hi there. The manual CCT will ot cause an "internal problem" with the chain slider - I have had manual tensioners for 5 years now. They are much better than the Honda OEM ones. New Honda ones are no better than old Honda ones.

Once manual are fitted they need very little periodic adjustment - in fact I have checked mine twice and they haven't needed any adjustment in 15,000 miles.

Also, I think (and others do too) that the manuals give a bit of a performance boost - not only that but you can snap the throttle off in confidence that the tensioner isn't going to fail!
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Thanks for your fast reply.

What my mechanic told me is that the chain slider will be fastly wear out, because there is a permanent pressure against the chain because de CCT. But I think if the bike has oil, it souldnt be a problem.

And, when installing them, how do I know the pressure that the Manual CCT has to have? Do you think is a good idea to take out the original CCT and to put next to the manual one to check it has the same size? What do you recomend me?

And the last question: Once installed, how do I know that I have to adjust it?

There are detailed instructions on this forum for fitting them in the workshop section. Make sure you follow them to the letter. As for how tight they should be, screw them in finger tight then back them out about a quarter of a turn. They won't cause any premature wear on the internals and you only need to adjust them if they start getting rattly.

Best way to adjust them is to follow the knowledgebase on CCT replacement. Fingertight as I have found out is a little hit & miss. IE; if u are an office worker & all u do is push pens about then finger tight may be correct. I tightened mine up the other day fingertight with the rockercover off just to see how tight i could get it at TDC. I could get it really tight so there was zero flex in the chain even backing it off 1/4 turn it was still too tight. I then decided to back it off to its original position put the bike back together warmed it up then proceeded to adjust them while the engine was running.

Here I backed them out just until I heard the familiar tacka tacka tacka, applied some threadlock (the blue stuff) then tightened until the tacka noise disapeared then locked it down. Really get that locknut tight & remember to support the adjuster nut while locking the locknut down as it will also wind in at the same time. This to me seems the best way to get the required tension.

Hi again and sorry for asking more or less the same. I still have my bike with the mechanic, and the last question that he asked me, was about the original tensioners. He told me that the original ones on the bike had this reference number: 14520mbb003, and when I had the CCT Failure, he put another original Honda tensioners with another reference number: 14520mbb013. He said that Honda has modificated the tensioners for skiping that failure.

So then, what should I do? Keep that originaly modificated tensioners or put the manual ones?

Thanks a lot. :) I still dont know what to do because I cant afford another 1.500 € For fixing my bike.

Best to put manual CCTs in and leave Honda OEM CCT failure/worry in the past so you can get on with riding the bike.

PS
He said that Honda has modificated the tensioners for skiping that failure.
Does the mechanic guarantee them in writing and will he fix it for free if it subsequently fails?
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

The mechanic told me that if I have the failure again, he would fix it for free, but I will still have to pay for the pieces. Anyway, next monday I'll call him and I will tell him to put the kriegger tensioners, and bye bye to the problem. (Thanks for the link, I already bought them)

Just remind your mechanic to find TDC before he swaps the tensioners out. Better still get him to read the knowledgebase on this forum before he does the work.
