Chain Tension Issue
Re: Chain Tension Issue
Ziggy, thats true, but then how do I account for even the tight fitting sprocket having the same exact problem? If its off center currently (the Renthal), its only by a tiny fraction of a millimeter, not enough to adjust chain slack by 10mm.
Re: Chain Tension Issue
Is it a regular cam like effect or is it as you put in your original post "There is no consistency to the point at which the tighter spot appears."?

Yeah, is the tight spot now once per wheel turn or same spot on chain or random?Wicky wrote:Is it a regular cam like effect or is it as you put in your original post "There is no consistency to the point at which the tighter spot appears."?

Re: Chain Tension Issue
not having a centre stand makes these bikes and ducati's a pain to test...you'll need a buddy to lean the bike over on the sidestand lifting the rear wheel off the groud to check the swingarn bearings...put your hands at 12 and 6 oclock and give a good tug to rock the wheel, this will inturn rock the swingarm bearings and any play will be felt.....sounds odd but thats how VOSA train you to do it....
Re: Chain Tension Issue
The effect is a regular cam effect, I did update this thread to that effect but it is very long now so probably got lost.
The tight spot is once per wheel rotation.
The tight spot is once per wheel rotation.
Re: Chain Tension Issue
??? If it is a regular effect and your chain's link is regular.... is the regularity happening on a 1 full turn sprocket rotation or 1 full chain rotationHowever, the tension problem occurrs no matter where the soft link is, whether its on a sprocket during that rotation, or not.
Have you double checked the link in the chain - Did you rivet it off or on the bike? Can you as a test degrease the side pate and put a mark on it (a bit off tape or something) turn the wheel around, check the run off/tight spot and see if there is a pattern in relation to the link
How many links are on your chain and how many teeth are on your rear sprocket?

One spot per sprocket rotation. Chain was riveted in place on the bike, its nice and supple. Checked for pattern, there isnt one in relation to the chain.Wicky wrote:??? 102 links 530 pitch, 41t rear sprocket, 16t front.
I'll post back with what I find out.

Re: Chain Tension Issue
Hi mate, just got your voice mail, been out working on the bike all afternoon myself....
It might just be a big coincidence you know...you may have a second egg shaped sprocket?

Re: Chain Tension Issue
if you fit 3 sprockets to the same carrier and you have the same results with all 3 sprockets it has to be the carrier thats at fault or is that just dumb thinking ??
Re: Chain Tension Issue
His old sprocket (1 of the 3) is absolutely fine.tattoo wrote:if you fit 3 sprockets to the same carrier and you have the same results with all 3 sprockets it has to be the carrier thats at fault or is that just dumb thinking ??
Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience!
Re: Chain Tension Issue
2 new sprocket by 2 differant manufacturers being egg shaped...i can't see him being that unlucky tbh.....i've changed 8 kits this year and only 1 had a faulty sprocket which they replaced with no quibble and 1 (mine) that was a tight fit but it runs true and has no tight spots....i still think it's the carrier at fault becoz 2 different sprockets wouldn't give the tight spot every 41t or 1 full rotation of the sprocket...just my way of thinking tho

Re: Chain Tension Issue
My son has the same issue with his 900 Triumph. Some times it is down to poor manufactured or fake C&S kits,A bent output shaft,Hub carrier bearing issues.Check the last two against a fixed pointer.
Re: Chain Tension Issue
I couldnt see that either, but thats what happened.tattoo wrote:2 new sprocket by 2 differant manufacturers being egg shaped...i can't see him being that unlucky tbh.....i've changed 8 kits this year and only 1 had a faulty sprocket which they replaced with no quibble and 1 (mine) that was a tight fit but it runs true and has no tight spots....i still think it's the carrier at fault becoz 2 different sprockets wouldn't give the tight spot every 41t or 1 full rotation of the sprocket...just my way of thinking tho
Unbelievable. Two new sprockets, two different manufacturers, Renthal and Powerite. Both out of spec.
Total sh1t.
Its still not right but some screwing around has got the issue down to 3mm, can live with that.
Re: Chain Tension Issue
Have you traced onto a sheet of paper any of the suspected oval sprockets and checked for asymmetry?

That's not a bad idea Wicky.Wicky wrote:Have you traced onto a sheet of paper any of the suspected oval sprockets and checked for asymmetry?
Another one would be to get someone to check possible run out by putting the sprocket in a lathe
