Hello

Post by Shantung »

Thought I'd leave a quick hello message. I've not actually bought a Firestorm yet, although it is my intention to :) I sold my 600 Bandit last winter after 3 years with the intention of getting either a firestorm or blade for this year. But a house move and wedding plans kinda got in the way.

So as a result I'm a little more limited on cash and choice :( The plan now is to get a nice winter project, so if anyone has a cheap VTR for sale drop me a line, I'll consider anything so long as the engine runs (or atleast turns over) has straight frame and forks and isn't stolen :p

With a bit of luck my next message will be to show and tell of a good purchase and the begginings of a project!

I'm in Darlington in the NorthEast.

That wealth of knowledge may come in usefull if I get a wreck to rebuild. I did rebuild my first bike which was a 20 yr old GPZ 500S, passed its MOT and everything :) But I guess there are more things than I would care to think of that I wouldn't know about. I have also rebuilt from the ground up a 90's fiesta (currently for sale if you search on ebay for a 1990's track car) and also done a lot of work on my last project which was a 1975 MGB GT which I also got through an MOT and sold on last week :)

welcome to the group, sounds like you have the right kind of background to do a rebuild project. one of the best options is to get one where the CCT has let go and bent the valves on the front head. if you are good with teh spanners you can fix this for less than £200 and have a nice bike.

Yep.
9 times out of 10 there's no other damage, as it makes a terrible noise when it goes, so people shut them off before any more damage is caused.

Alternatively, keep an eye out on the insurance clearance sites for a cat c cosmetic damaged bike.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Yes that's my idea. I've been reading through old posts and one of the main worries for a lot of VTR owners is the Cam tensioner going and taking the valves with them and sometimes damaging the pistons. I'd be happy to approach most things as long as it doenst need more than a small amount of machining to put right. Re-seating some new valves though and maybe swapping out the piston would be fine though. A cosmetic cat-C would be an option too, would give me a chance to practice my plastic welding :) If anyone has any links to insurance sell offs etc beyond ebay and autotrader, any links would be much appriciated.

Just to add, my actual name is Adam :) I started using "Shantung Black Tiger" for forums years ago as I was reading up on some various types of martial arts and thought it was a cool name.

Simo, yes MSG is just down the road, I did a lot of riding through there when I was doing my Direct Access course (few years ago now but I can still remember), all the round-a-bouts were a favourite of my instructor. My other half works at the vets in MSG a couple of days of the week too. I'm guessing your "unused" VTR is most likely well kept and as such would be worth a lot more than I'm looking to get one for :?

Aye, Hope to get around £1850 as it's a W reg with only 7000 miles. Hope you get what you want. If and when you require some bits, there's a breaker in Barton st with some and one in Crook both on Eblag. Crook the town, usually gets some funny remarks from the southern members on this Forum :biggrin

Well, after much deliberation I'm afraid I won't be getting a Firestorm after all, I was swayed by a lovely 929 Fireblade at my local bike shop that I'll be collecting on Saterday :)

Thanks though for the warm welcome from everyone, it does seem like a really nice forum.
