Hi, some advice ...

Post by thunder »

Hi guys, i know this topic has been around alot (here and other forums), but i am trying to get a consensus.
I have a 99 VTR, and she is going like the clappers...but this can chain tensioner failure thing is constantly on my mind.
I really want to do some long trips on her (like 5000km to south west africa and back)

She has 32 000 km.
Do i wait for it to let go?
Fit manual ones from APE?
Fit new OEM ones?

I will follow the general recommendations.

Thanks
Thor

Your options of
1) Do i wait for it to let go?
2) Fit manual ones from APE?
3) Fit new OEM ones?

dont do 1), they will fail, and the cost / effort of fixing is 100 times more than preventitive solution.

dont do 3), they are still a time bomb and you are in a do loop with option 1) again

so either do option 2), or look at option 4) which is to fit the fail safe stopper mod to your existing or new stock CCT's.

I strongly believe the auto CCT is a good idea for a road engine, so I do the stopper on my engine(s) then I have the best of both worlds, but your choice has to be 2 or 4.

Hope that helps

If Im been honest, I just run OEM tensioners and take the view on them as a service item every year, done 4k of hard hard riding with a few trackdays thrown in and aint had a problem!

However now the bikes been converted to run in Thunderbikes next season I think a set of manuals may be on the cards!

Best advice, change em and forget about em, then ride the thing! lol

Cheers Guys.

I bet you guys are sick of giving advice on CCT's. Well I'm going to go for manual ones. It doesn't look too different from the system on my Cb750k.
At least then i have peace o mind for the next 30k(hopefully)

Bazza, cheers mate, have sent you a PM.
