Exhaust Gaskets

Is there a preference to which type of gaskets to use. There seems to be 3 types available.

Copper

Soft Aluminium or Alloy

I am In the process of removing my exhaust as I eventually found where the small ticking noise was coming from. Hairline crack at the side of the weld, just at the joint turning under the bike from the right foot peg. Anyway all bolts (including header) came off surprisinly easy apart from the rear link pipe clamp up to the rear cylinder. bolt head is rounded so hack saw or dremel tonight to cut the bolt off.

ps, anybody know what grade of steel the exhaust actually is?

Don't buy the ebay ones as they are the wrong size.

David Silvers have the compressible copper ring type. Search the for forum for a recent thread re. Mikalor stainless steel clamps.

Once the exhaust is off you should be able to get the crack welded for £10-£20 - also check the condition of the link pipe/header pipe 'graphite' seals,
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Anybody know what grade of steel the exhaust of the Storm actually is? :?

Mild S/S ? :confused

ST, If you mean what type of steel is used for the headers :?: it is stainless steel, but not of the highest quality,

Okay, so got new gaskets, new studs and nuts (genuine Honda), and exhaust being welded, but question is ?

Do you just screw in the exhaust studs (not the tightest fit, can screw in with fingers) and work on the fact that they will not move when the header is tightened up on them, or do you have to put any sort of locking compound on the thread before screwing into the engine ? :confused

Nigel,

Use thread lock if you like but as a minimum lock two nuts onto the studs and use them to screw the studs tight into the head before you fit the exhaust.

tbh mate with exhaust studs i grease them and put them in by hand only.
makes them a lot easier to get out if ever you have to.
if you threadlock them and bottom them out you end up having to drill them out in a few years time, which is a pain :roll:
any other stud yeh, lock them up, but exhaust studs no, cos they get very hot and are very exposed at the front of the engine and the nuts will most probably corrode on over time making them a pig to get out in one piece.
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

In the process of repairing exhaust and whilst off replacing the studs and nuts.

Well, front 2 exhaust studs came out dead easy along with the nuts and the rear 2 nuts came off easily enough too. Rear studs still in the engine and look good, but I would like to see if I can get them out to replace, but do so without damaging them incase they decide not to move. Honda being Honda, the studs are 7M and the exhaust nuts cover most of the thread so you can't get 2 on to lock up to try and unsrew the stud. I have gone through every nut and bolt oin my garage and don't have a flat 7M nut anywhere. Does anyone happen to have 2 x 7M nuts that I could thread on and tighten up together to try and see if the stud will come out.

tbh m8 if they look good/clean i'd leave them alone...but if you know someone that works for a kwik fit/wilko motosave type of shop they'll let you try the nuts on the ones you've taken out...you'll be suprised what they have in their nut bins..

I know m8t, sorry for your dilema. Know exactly how frustrating it can be. For what it's worth, you could try and dremel a groove in the head of the bolt and try an impact driver?

if you try this, put a nut on the end when you're trying to turn it so the grooved bit doesnt just snap off ;)
a few sharp knocks inwards usually loosens them up good. :thumbup:
