Hard to start when hot

Post by macfreebe »

Hi there was taking the bike for its mot on friday and it passed no bother but when i went to start it it would hardley turn over in the end i ended up burning out the connection on the starter. The battery is new a bosch one and was fully charged b4 i left. After about a hour when it cooled down i came back with the van + tools and tried starting which it did no bother .Took it back to workshop turned it of and same again wont hardley turn over when its hot when trying to start. Its the first time on the bike since i fitted manual cam chain tensioners maybe i set them to tight? or could it be valve clearances ?.I set the clearances not that long ago on the front head .Could it be the starter connection was getting bad and that you need more power when the engine is hot?.If anyone has had the same problem or any ideas let us know thanks

Starter motor connection sounds shagged due to corrosion - did you keep it greased up under the rubber hood? Cos once crap and water gets past seals into motor and/or corroded connector it makes it harder and harder to start .

I had the exact same problem after I fitted manual CCT's, re-setting the tension of the CCT's sorted it for me, the cause being cam chain being too tight.

Yep sounds as though cct too tight. They get tighter as bike heats up, so could explain the problem.

Did you do them up finger tight only?

What i did was i set the engine at marks , cylinders at top dead centre according to workshop section and locked acct in place with key, removed acct and measured them being at 56.5 mm from face of gasget to end of rubber + less 1mm.for rubber.55.5mm(Both cylinders were the same) I then set the mcct to this size and fitted them and then the problems began.I read some were that you should have some one on the bike when doing this ?as this measurment can change due to the weight of the rider ? dont know about that. I have no one to help apart from people from this site (you know who you r thanks ) so am very gratful of help thanks

That's the drive chain you are thinking of fella. The cam chains won't be affected by load (rider etc). The cam chain needs a bit of adjustment to get it right. I didn't just rely on length when I did mine, just used the auto's as a guide.

you will know if there are too tight, the cahn chains will scream literaly, mine were too tight the first time I installed them and the sreamed on start up when the chain is on load. just turned them back quater of a turn and no more problems.

not starting could be to do with the timimg being out, as I believe that the ignition advances when the bike gets hot. its a coincidence that you changed the cct and now have the problem. most people throw the timimg out 180deg, thus the bike does not rev past 6000rpm.
