Hi Fellas
could do with a measurement, how much should a fork leg project above the top yoke on a bog standard Storm ? and am i right in thinking that the standard clip ons sit directly on the yoke, with the circlip on top of that ?,
if thats the case then mine sticks up an extra 25mm or so,
you are correct. with the circlip fitted it should sit on top of the clipon, and the clipon should contact the top yoke.
25 mm dropped in the yokes is a lot, if you have standard springs that could be borderline unstable, and even with new springs you are risking ground clearance when cornering
Interesting...have been riding around for about 5 years with no problems in the handling department !
although it does seem to drop into corners quite easily
what would be an easy fix without getting the forks into a twist, ie do one leg at a time with the front end off the ground ?
If you want to get things back to normal, best remove the front wheel, loosen bolts and then drop them each back down, retighten to torque specs etc. Check for spacer/s on the rear shock (or you might consider adding some at a later date from slotted washers incrementally to speed the steering back up.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
Its not that i dont like it as it is , i do, just thought i would put it back to where it started and see what its like, have a 3mm spacer coming so, if needs be, will put that in once have sorted the forks, AMCQs right should be having alsorts of problems ,head shake, grounding, but not so far, aint got any circlips so will check out Mr Silvers emporium
You can borrow my circlips if the new cost is too scary. I dont use them even though I have the forks at standard position, as I run the clip ons 6mm higher on the forks for a slightly higer riding position and it allows me to angle them back more.
I have to assume you already have uprated fork springs as I think 25mm drop on standard springs would be more than a little scary, but it will make the bike turn in faster, thats why we are all doing that or fitting a spacer under the back.
Because I have long legs and and need ground clearance as I already manage to drag the bellypan when cornering, i make all my changes by lifting the back, I think I have 3mm in spacers and 3mm on the ride height adjuster on my Nitron Shock.
The other think to note is that the rear spacer is not a 1:1 ratio to dropping the forks. A 1mm shock spacer works through the linkage ratio and lifts the back end by about 2 or 2.5mm, whereas a 1mm drop in the forks is 1mm
