downpipes

hi, gafr here. everybody knows the trouble that you have with the exhaust studs when removing the downpipes. well, now its my turn.
i have to get the front downpipe off because its blowing from the gasket, but i don"t want to snap the studs when removing it.
as usual they are well rusted in position, trouble or what!
what i want to know is, are the collars held on by nuts on the studs or do you have to remove the entire stud?
if they are nuts, then could i just remove them by using a nut splitter and just replacing the nuts when i re-install the pipe?
i have to admit, after seeing all the troubles that others have had doing this job, im not really eager to do it, but the mot"s due soon and it won"t pass as it is.

IIRC Just the bolts off to remove exhaust headers, still while you're in there I would replace studs with new uns and copper grease if there is corrosion apparent. Plus new collapsible copper exhaust gaskets 18291-MM8-880 http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/part ... ber_10164/

it is just the nuts holding the flange on, so if you wanted to try and split the nuts it would allow you to get the exhaust off and then clean the stud up [run a die down it] before re assembly.............but it might be a bit of a restricted access to get a nut splitter in.

good luck mate, wish I had considered that as I'm still bikeless and have two studs protuding waiting for the next assault on them next week!

cheers to everyone for your answers, i"ll be having a go as soon as i can get hold of a nut splitter of the right size, ie. to fit in the allowing space. hope you all have a great crimbo, make sure you all get pissed!!!
