Storm keeps blowing 30 amp fuse
Storm keeps blowing 30 amp fuse
Hi All, I got me a 97 Storm from ebay for £1100 last week with 28k on clock and rode it a few days and loved it (V twin virgin) but unfortunately it blew the main 30 amp fuse and all was dead. I replaced it and it blew istantly, tried another and that blew too. it was raining at the time so was wondering if it was 1, a short. 2, heated grips (came with bike but gonna remove soon) or 3, The Rectifier.
Please help as I wanna ride it sooooon.

Hi, there.
If you want, I'll drop over and give you a hand- I only live in Sevenoaks.
It'll probably be the heated grips, but if not I have spare reg/recs, etc.
Best get a stock of 30 amp fuses, though, as the quickest way to find fault like this is to disconnect every connector under the seat, remove all of the blade fuses in the fusebox, then one at a time replace each fuse, then reconnect the connectors one at a time until it blows.
That at least gives you a starting point.
You won't be able to PM me yet- you can't do that or post in Sales and Wants until you have a few posts under your belt, but if interested post a reply here and we'll sort something out.

Re: Storm keeps blowing 30 amp fuse
er, might sound like a silly question, but have you checked the battery is the right polarity?
as in the black -- lead going to earth and the red + lead going to the starter solenoid?
also take the seat off and check a wire hasnt been trapped and grounded against the seat / subframe.
if it only blows when you press the starter it will be the + post insulator corroded on the starter or burnt out starter solenoid.
i'd take up tony's offer if i was you, but check the above forst so you dont look a plonker.
cos he defo will take the piss if its sumat daft lol

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.
Re: Storm keeps blowing 30 amp fuse
Hi Benny, will check that as guy I got it off had just fitted a new battery.
Tony, I may well take you up on that offer will get some fuses as soon as I can. When is the best time for you as I work shifts?

This weekend, mate, if you have a garage and a bit of heat and light it would be good.Duffy1964 wrote:Hi Benny, will check that as guy I got it off had just fitted a new battery.

Probably heading up to the Bike Show at Excel one day, not sure which day yet, though.

Hi Tony, Great I am off Saturday, have garage with light but will need to pop indoors for a warm up and a brew if you are free.

Re: Storm keeps blowing 30 amp fuse
i had the same problem other year. it turned out to be the alarm so removed that and been fine ever since
Re: Storm keeps blowing 30 amp fuse
My rectumfryer caused me the 30 amp popping issue...grrr...
She told me she was 16.
Re: Storm keeps blowing 30 amp fuse
Cheers Guys, quick update Battery was fitted correctly, I have removed the heated grips and also found a 12v adaptor under the tank with a ciggarette adaptor which has also been removed.
The rest all looks standard so tied another 30amp fuse, but that blew too.
It has a standard rectifier (un-finned) and the plug when removed shows signs of heat on green and yellow wire terminals r/h as it plugs in, but not sure if it was like that before or it is recent.
Am I right in assuming this now points to the rectifire? or should I check anything else?

Re: Storm keeps blowing 30 amp fuse
Early OEM unfinned R/R was upgraded in later models as it had a nasty habit of overheating and frying electrics - Get rid of pronto before it causes any more damage.

Re: Storm keeps blowing 30 amp fuse
if the connector looks to be heat damaged you need to replace the terminals as well, as they will now be high resistance and will continue to cause heating when the new rgulator is fitted
