Calling all brake experts...

Post by sirch345 »

I've been working on the front brakes of a friends Firestorm.

The front wheel was dragging on the brakes when trying to turn it with it suspended. I removed the disc pads, took the calipers off the bike and cleaned all the dirt and dust from both with brake cleaner. I also pumped the pistons out a little and cleaned them up as well, but didn't split the calipers at this point as all the pistons (with a little toing and froing) seemed to move reasonable well.

I copper slipped the leading and tailing points on the pads as well as the backs and the holding pins before reassembling it all. But you've probably guessed it, they're still binding.

The next step was to split the calipers to see what the seals were like. I was expecting (hoping) to find some corrosion once the pistons were removed, but nothing :!: Even under the first dust seal I removed it was like new under it.

I am now wondering if the pads are somehow not free enough in the calipers, although they don't seem to be a tight fit when sliding them in (oh err missus  ) now I've cleaned them.

Does anyone have any ideas where I go from here :?:

Any advice would be very much appreciated :plainsmile

when you replace the seals use RED RUBBER grease on the seals and in the recess .
polish the pistons and coat them in the red grease .
rebuild the calipers and use copper slip on all the bolts and on the pad pin , bleed the brakes then they should work well
if that dont work service the master cylinder

Seals swelled up? Discs slightly bent/warped?

Ive never been one for red rubber grease though, Ive only ever used brake fluid to lube them up!

Thanks guys for replying

Going back over what was done in my head as you do, before splitting the calipers we did try placing a thick piece of metal between the pistons with the brake pads removed. Then activating the brake so the pistons were all grabbing the spacer. Thinking about it the pistons did not release the spacer once the brake was no longer applied, so hopefully it is the seals.

Where is the best place to get the seals, and do I need to replace the two seals that seal the two halves of the caliper together :?:

As with all seals, always try and use OEM Honda jobbies, David Silvers maybe, and same with the bridge seals, if you can get them, replace them, if not and there in good nick just re-use them, Ive never replaced them seals when rebuilding calipers in the past as they can be tricky to get hold of!

As it turned out it turned out the caliper seals were the problem causing the wheel to drag/bind. We found this out by swapping over the brake calipers from my bike. The seals must have either gone hard, or swollen as Nora suggested. We replaced them all.

Information that may be helpful for others.
Each seal pack contains two rubber seals (one piston seal and one dust seal, enough for one piston only). The standard VTR calipers have four pistons in each caliper (two of one size and two of another), so that means eight seal packs will be needed for a complete set:-

4 off part No. 06451-KV3-405

4 off part No. 06451-KV3-406

noticed the brakes were binding on mine earlier, turned out to be an accumilation of dust where the edge of the pads meet the caliper a good clean up and seems to be sorted :D
