Progress update...

Post by benh89 »

Evening y'all!

This is just a continuation of this thread: http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 33#p181207

In appreciation for the folks who contributed, I thought I'd throw up a small update. I imagine there are some that show up, ask a question and then disappear, never to be seen until they have another problem. I intend not to be one of those people.

Firstly, a couple of pics after a quick clean today:

Anyway, my previous thread mentioned several issues, most of which are sorted, but new ones exist.

The knocking noise seems to have disappeared, and I didn't even do anything! The chain adjustment was correct. I removed the alarm (now my battery actually lasts for more than two days) and Scott oiler. I've even ridden it now! It's a lot different to my CBF, but I haven't pushed it yet, as I still haven't replaced the CCT's. Very easy to go fast without realising as the engine noise doesn't make it seem fast.

True to form, the reg/rec failed on it's maiden voyage, though luckily I had stopped at a friend's house so I wasn't stranded. The dealer sent out a new one under warranty and now all is well (with the electrics). The latest problem is that oil is leaking out from the oil filler cap when the bike is running. Although a small amount, could it be that there is too much oil in the engine or the o-ring needs replacing?

Anyone know where I can get the fairing decals from? I was thinking Lings Honda, unless anyone can recommend someone else.

At the moment, it is just too tempting to strip it and thoroughly inspect and clean everything. I'm trying not to though, as if I do, it probably won't be back on the road by spring/summer.

Cheers, Ben.

Edit: Not sure whether I should post this, but here goes... I put the baffles back in!!! [Flame suit on]. It was a bit loud and backfiring all the time.

Not normal for Torrey Canyon style spillage, try an new o'ring and checking over the clutch cover carefully in case it's coming from nearby.

ASM suggests bumble signs has vector templates for making vinyl decals and in chrome. At least get the CCTs fixed ASAP to manuals as they'll ruin your day if they implode and with those sorted as preventative maintenance along with the fixed R/R you'll be sorted for the long term.

A fenda extender will help keep the winter crud of the vulnerable starter (bung a glop of grease or vaseline under the rubber hood to stop it corroding) if you're running about in these climes.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Good to hear you are making progress on the issues

Any oil from the filler sounds like it is missing the o ring that should be on te top thread of the filler cap.

The backfiring sounds like thre might be air leaks in the exhaust where the clamp gaskets are missing or butchered . Also if you took off the Scott oiler, make sure there is no air leak on the inlet side...and it will be worth balancing your carbs.

Watch out for a workshop day near you in spring and come along if you need some coaching or tools to do CCT or carb balance.

Not at all usual to have an oil leak from the filler cap, check to see if an o ring is actually there.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Hi Ben, like the fairing indicators, where did you get them or what are they from? I have some ugly after market ones I am looking to change.
