Blowing fuses
Blowing fuses
I am tring to recommision my 99 firestorm after a 5 year layup following an electrical problem. That was down to the ecu which was replaced. I fitted a new battery resoldered some wires etc. and the machine was turning over quite happily and was eventually firing but then blew the 30 amp fuse on the starter relay switch. I replaced it with the battery disconnected, reconnected and everything was good, turned over a few times, I stopped for a few secs. not wanting to overload the system, then the fuse blew again. Tried to replace the fuse with battery connected but blew right away, replaced with batt. disconnected but on trying to reconnect batt. sparks etc. at connection and blew again. Obviously a short somewhere. Electrics are a complete mystery, mechanics fine, elecs. no. Anybody got some simple tests, and I mean simple, that might be worth a try, or any other advice. Hearadh.

Greetings
Have you tested the Regulator/Rectifier (presumably on a '99 an early unfinned dodgy one) - replace with a later upgraded finned one or yam one (see link below for Workshop Knowledgebase) and make sure all your leccy connections are clean, and earth's are securely and cleanly earthed...
How recent is the battery as this could be damaged by a failed R/R, as possibly your ECU was.

And post some pics of your electrifying Storm!

Re: Blowing fuses
Man quick reply, bikers just the best for help. Battery is new, on my way to local dealer for a handful of fuses and discussion. Electrifying Storm would be a bit embarrassed to be seen on line just now, doesn't fancy appearing naked !

We love Storms esp nekkid VTRs!
here's a few threads that cover the subject of 30 amp fuses blowing - browse through and see if any strike a chord with your problem. Depending where you are there might be someone nearby with a multimeter and some vaseline ;-)

Re: Blowing fuses
Two real possibilities, outside of a chafed-through wire somewhere earthing out.
RR and less likely, shorted alternator windings.
You can disconnect the alternator, at the connector under the front of the seat, and see if it still blows fuses.
If it does, it's the RR.
If not those, check main starter lead, to see if it's rotted where it joins the starter motor.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
