Here's a question that's probably been asked already...
If your bike shows symptoms of reg/rec failure, is the battery already likely to be buggered?
I was going to get a replacement and just keep it to hand, only fitting if needed. My last storm never gave me and trouble in this dept, in 4 years and 44000 miles, 32000 of which were mine.
Don't see the point of changing the current one thats doing the job till its had it.

Re: Reg Rec Question.
Sometimes you get away with it, occasionally they fail to zero output, sometimes they fail to 40 volts.
Depends on what you had switched on and for how long when it failed, and how many times you recharged the battery and kept riding it hoping it would go away.
Also what revs you use.
Get it fitted, it takes minutes.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
Re: Reg Rec Question.
Yes, I know its an easy job. Maybe I'll sling the old one somewhere easy to reach in the unlikely event i'll need it. My mates failed on the way to the Ring, was a right pain. Ta.

Re: Reg Rec Question.
Why not fit a voltmeter; I use one built in with a digi gear indicator.
That way you'll spot it straight away if it fails.

Re: Reg Rec Question.
Top of clocks, between clocks and DB screen, just sits nicely and is in line of sight.
Used a sticky Velcro pad to mount it, seems stable enough.
Run the cabling down and along the LH frame rail with the hydraulic clutch line, back to battery/fuse box area.
There's a quick disconnect supplied that sits alongside the LH headstock so that you can unplug the clocks if needed.
There, you didn't have to brace yourself, did you?
