prepairing for carbon fibre cock-up!

Post by agentpineapple »

ok here goes.
a week or so ago i asked if anyone had a seat cowl with a bit of damage that they were willing to donate to my experiment.
forum member rob kindly stepped forward with a badly scratched/scuffed yellow cover.
top man rob, he only asked that i cover the postage
heres some pictures of the repair which was basic rubbing down, filling with plastic filler, more rubbing down, spaying with plastic primer, more rubbing down. and then i ran out of primer
to be honest its probably over kill on my part because i'm going to be skinning/wrapping it with real carbon fibre weave from carbonmods.co.uk
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Carbon-Fibre- ... 3cc2ddd7a3
i'll be ordering the kit this week, so next week i'll be attempting not to rock it up,i'll post pictures with my results when i do it.
heres some pictures of my progress so far....

if all goes well, i will attempt a few more items, like mirrors, i might even get the mould kit and knock out some frame protectors. i might be getting ahead of myself tho. lets wait and see....

Here's my effort with red carbon effect vinyl wrap.

Took half an hour to do and cost me £6 all in.

because its a skinning job and not a wrap like templ8's although his does look nice. the finish i'll be going for is real carbon fibre.
if all goes well and its not a massive pain in the butt, i would consider doing them for forum members, but you would need to send me a seat cowl to cover, and i'd have to factor in the cost of the materials(which ain't cheap), so i'm not sure how much it would cost yet, but yeah i'd consider it pete.
if it goes very well, i might consider doing mirrors, maybe front sprocket cover, maybe the metal heel guards on the footrests. basically the easy stuff
if i was to get half decent at it i might consider trying to cover my old 16ltr petrol tank which would look very nice. but lets just see how it goes.....

I'm going to watch this close cause I was going to rebuild the tabs on my rear plastics using fibre glass on the inside, but looking at this kit I might build the tabs and cover in carbon fibre,

my preferece on finish would be to mix colour in with the lacquer and spray so you can see the weave through the paint but still looks red

i like the idea of the weave showing thru the colour bazza, but i'm not the best with paint and i'm average at best with rattle cans, so unless i could get a reasonably priced painter i'll have to leave it with the normal carbon look.
if it goes well, i might get the other two kits and knock up lots of frame protection, i have a spare frame so it shouldn't be that tough, lets wait and see...
i'll be ordering the kit this weekend, so it will be some time next week when the fun begins...

bad news, i just measured the carbon fibre sheet and it isn't wide enough to cover the single seat cowl, so unless i can get a bigger sheet of c/f i won't be doing the cover :(
i think i'll do the mirrors instead any ideas at to what else i could cover?
