what else could it be?? BRAKES!!
what else could it be?? BRAKES!!
right then.
i bought this bike not so long ago. all was well until i came to the first roundabout. touched the brake and it squealed its self to death! its so bad that i can actually feel it through the bars. not to mention how loud it is!
so i got it home and tried a different used set of pads, not forgetting to copper grease the backs and pins up.
still the same
stripped cleaned and beautified a spare set of calipers up. copper grease etc with the 2nd set of pads.
still the same
got a piece of glass, 40 grit, de glazed the original pads, copper grease, cleaned calipers.
stillthe same
stripped, cleaned, greased original calipers.
still the same.
tried brembo sintered pads just now
still the same.
now im all out of ideas of what it could be. would air in the lines maybe not push the pistons out as much or maybe just enough to set it off whining? or could it be the discs themselves? they are some generic wavy ones.
its making me hate the damn thing.

Re: what else could it be?? BRAKES!!
yes it could be the discs. I had a judder through teh bars from speeds above 60mph after I upgraded teh calipers to bigger ones [they were OK with std calipers] , and tried all your solutions [and also deglased the discs] but only new discs fixed it.
strangly I gave my old discs to another member and they worked fine for him with the standard caliper set up.
there are only 2 things left that it could be
1) Discs
2) wheel bearings allowing the discs to misalign [but this might be lower frequency]

Re: what else could it be?? BRAKES!!
thank you very much for the quick reply.
i was hoping it wasnt going to be the discs. the bearings are fine since it feels solid to ride and not vague and grumbly as you would associate with knackered bearings.
i might try taking them off and giving them a good clean. maybe even switch sides after ive roughed them right up

if its fine then get your self new discs, wouldn't want to buy discs and find out its not them at fault, disc prices are a wombles joke, even second hand they want way to much

Re: what else could it be?? BRAKES!!
Some pads come with anti-squeal shims, they are usually copper, with a perforated mesh on them, that clip on the back of the pads.
Have a look at your old ones to see if you had them on, and transfer them to the new ones if you can.
If none fitted, you might be able to order some up separately, but I think it's more likely to be discs.
If you put the front on a paddock stand (or very carefully on two car axle stands, with someone holding the bike steady) and spin the wheel.
You can usually see any disc runout.
If there is any, have the wheels been powdercoated recently, and the disc mounting faces not been cleaned properly?
Try unbolting the discs, cleaning beneath, and refitting.
But if there's visible runout then new or replacement discs are needed.
Might as well bite the bullet, and get decent ones, Braking Wave discs on mine at the moment, and they're much better than standard ones.
Two-finger lockup to the point of tyre squeal with plenty of feel. About £400.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
Re: what else could it be?? BRAKES!!
its one disc thats proving troublesome. its the harmonic frequency owing to the fact it appears to be less than good quality stee'. little pits all over the metal. i think they are the chepa chinese discs. the one that is making the noise has a dulled gold centre. as in, they dont look like a bought pair.
ive taken the wheel off this weekend, removed all traces of threadlock from the mounting faces on the wheel incase there was a crusty bit on there keeping the disc stood off. i cleaned up the discs with 40 again. swapped the discs to oposite sides and it is 100% the disc at fault.
i deduced that it is simply a matter of changing the harmonic frequency of the disc. so i smacked it with a hammer and shouted at it. it worked until the pads realigned it.
i think i shall be after some replacement (budget) discs to be honest. £400 is outta my league at the moment.

Re: what else could it be?? BRAKES!!
Just a thought, but it could be clogged buttons?
Try putting a nut and bolt either side of each button and rotating it with a spray of brake cleaner until free to turn; do this with all buttons and see if it improves the situation.
Worth a try before you buy parts.

Re: what else could it be?? BRAKES!!
christ on a bike thats rough!
ill try rotating the buttons but my money is on it being some absolute crap metal used for the disc. it really doesnt look good.
