Rattle bang and coolant out the exhaust???

Post by AdamR »

Hi Guys,

I was driving along and then there was a bang followed by what i can only describe as a spinning clicking noise. I then stopped as soon as I could and turned engine off and on again. The bike still drove but I didnt carry on. After about an hour of waiting for a van to pick me up we loaded the bike in (It started but lost compression) and drove home.
When we opened up the van again there was a pool of what i think was coolant pooring out of the exhaust.

Has anyone had this or know of it that coulds tell me what damage I could have possibly done?
I am no mechanic I change bulbs and put fuel in.
Is this a problem that is worth the expense of even taking it to a garage.

It is my pride and joy but it is a P Reg and has 30k on the clock so id probably say it would only be worth around £1000 (I have no idea)
Not sure how much it is worth spending on it.

Any help or ideas much appreciated.

Thanks in advance a gutted storm owner Adam

Blown head gasket? cracked cylinder head? Catastrophic CCT failure?

It'll need a tear down to investigate to be sure
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

sounds very much like cct has gone and bust an exhaust valve through the water jacket - it'll be a new head at least or a lot of remedial welding and rework. :(
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

The water coming out of the exhaust part is unusual.

Firstly, take off the tank and airbox and undo the little cap bolt on each cct, out a tiny flat blade screwdriver down each and turn to see if there is till spring tension on both.

Chances are that one will feel fine (i.e. turn one way a quarter turn until it tightens, the other way you will feel it undoing but against spring tension) and the other will have no spring tension, almost always it's the front one that breaks.

If that's the case, go ahead and strip the heads off, all will be revealed.
Then, depending on the amount of damage, repair or replace the engine.

But coolant- could be coolant pump failure??
Some other failure of a component that's punched a hole somewhere??

As already said, engine out and pull it apart to see what's happened.
It's not worth paying a dealer to do, though.

Spare engine will be from £250-300. Try to see the donor bike; if it's a front end wreck at least you know the engine was running ok up until the accident!

Post in Sales and Wants if you need parts.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Thanks for your replys. I have put her into a garage to asses the damage so will be posting up a shopping list soon.

Is there any particular salvage or breakers that anyone uses and recommends?

Where have you seen an engine for £250 - £300 all i can find so far is £500. Im quite interested in finding a donar bike but havnt managed to source any yet!

Thanks
