Shock replace/upgrade

Post by karenvtr »

Hi guys hope every one is ok and been enjoying all the fantastic weather we have been having !!

Im thinking Wonda is due a new rear shock as the suspension is getting very soft, Chris says the spring is doing all the work ?

Im going to replace it but were on a budget so do I buy a second hand shock or get mine rebuilt ? Chris has had a few done for his bikes at firefox racing in Keightly which is about £100.

Iv been asked to post a link to this up http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-VTR1000 ... 5893063b7b Does any one know anything about this make of shocker?

Help please guys !! :confused

Hi Karen, that is a standard shock by the look of it. It is cheap tho.

The standard rear shock has a very hard spring on it so replacing it with another standard unit & depending on the mileage of the e-bay item it may or may not be any better than the one you have already.

I think you can get these shocks fettled by a shock fettler but go for a weight rated spring whilst having it done. Have a search for suspension specialist on the web, I was looking the other day & there are loads out there, who will re-charge, re-valve & re-spring.

However by the time you've had it spruced up & re-sprung your getting close to the price of a new budget shock.

Loads out there, Maxton, Hagon & Nitron are all worth looking at.

Then you run into the problem of if you've done the rear it will show up the shortcomings in the forks.

You may have to re-think that budget.

i wouldn't touch that shock with a bargepole, you just don't know its history, i have a old shock knocking around, i wouldn't sell it tho, because its had its life. a budget new shock from hagon is just under £300 if i remember rightly, i bought a new one from hagon built to my weight and riding style, it cost me £385 and i'm very pleased with it. i don't care that its a budjet item, its loads better than the standard one.
i'm not 100% sure but the standard shock is a sealed unit and cannot be rebuilt.
you can get a good quality new rear spring for £100 tho. hyperpro/maxton/k-tec/hagon you can get them matched to your weight which helps no end....
if you want another standard rear shock, go for this, lings have sold a few of these to other forum members and they have all been happy with them...

Karen I replaced my standard shock with a Penske over the winter so I have a good condition shock from a 2003 14,000 mile VTR if you need it. Make me an offer on a pm if the E Bay deal doesn't work out.

If you do want to get the shock checked out or a spring replacement then can't recommend firefox enough. They really know what they're doing. Got a rebuilt / reconditioned ohlins unit from them last year and had the forks revolved and sprung. Best thing I ever did to the bike.
You could try and pick up a secondhand nitro/hagon/ohlins unit that is past it's service and get these guys to sort it fur you.
