Puncture repair

Post by Murv »

Just been doing a bit of Googling about getting the puncture repaired on my rear tyre and it appears that "W" rated tyres cannot be repaired within the British standard.

Does that sound right? do i really now have to fork out for a pair of tyres on top of everything else? (the front is a little low but legal)

Cheers,

Chris

Repair to Motorcycle tyres can be carried out subject to certain limitations. A motorcycle that does not have a ‘W’ speed rating can have a repair carried out in the tread area of the tyre subject to the size of the puncture and any associated damage inside the tyre.
There is no British Standard for carrying out repairs to Motorcycle tyres with a ‘W’ speed rating and therefore most of these tyres cannot be repaired.
quote taken from http://www.protyre.co.uk/faqsdesc.aspx?id=4

From what I can see it's not that they can not be repaired, it's that the repair does not carry a British Standard.
There is a limit to how many repairs you can have in one tyre, can't remember how many, I think it's something like 3.

I used to carry my own roadside repair kit around when dispatch riding. You know the type with the bungs, glue, mini co2 cylinders etc. I once had a tyre with about 6 repairs that I done  they work great, but obviousely they should only be tempory and have them repaired properly at a tyre shop

Have fun

Cheers fella, just had it done at Watling tyres, they had no problem with the "W" rating and stuck a plug in.
Unfortunately it wouldn't hold so he patched it as well but said there was still a bit of air getting out around the plug but said it might be a bit of air trapped under the plug.
Just tested it and no leakage now so hopefully it'll be fine

Only want to get this Year out of it anyway as it's 4 Years old now

Well done mate that's good news, well almost. Sounds like it's holding and should get you through to when you need, or can afford a new tyre if needs be.

I have just bought an Abba stand as well! these things all tot up  Saying that, I sometimes look for excuses to buy a new tool to add to the collection

Ride Safe

I know what you mean, I "had" to buy the ABBA stand and a decent socket set just to get the wheel off but it's about time I had some decent tools.
Hopefully they'll pay for themselves in the long run, as long as I don't keep buying tools but still take the bike to the shop for any work to be done

I had a puncture on a worn tyre two weeks before I went to the Bulldog Bash dragstrip one year; didn't want to destroy a brand new tyre on burnouts and warmups, so I plugged it and crossed my fingers.
Worked, fine, no probs at all.
Got a new tyre at the Tyre Bus to ride home on, though.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Do keep your eye on it.
My Brother had a puncture in an almost new rear tyre for his Hayabusa, the repair leaked :!: It seemed OK to start with.

Cheers guys
I'll keep a close eye on it although I'm hoping for no problems with the patch inside as well as the plug.
I'm going to change both tyres next Spring anyway (they'll be 5 Years old then) I'm just hoping to get this Year out of them as it's been a fair bit of payout this Year and the rear looks to have done very few miles from new.
Any hint of a problem though and I'll junk them.
