Mouldy Air Filter!

Post by darrenmartin »

Hi guys im stripping down the air box of my newly aquired Storm only to find that the bikes been used so little (w reg 7,000 miles) that the air filter has got a lovley layer of green mould growing on it! 8O not a problem as im replacing it any way with either K&N or maybe Piper Cross. Do have a couple of questions though 1st what does all the "plumbing" under the air fitler do :?: and also the 2 small sponge inserts that sit in either corner of the lower half of the air box have perished and turned too the consistancy of victoria sponge cake! Now iv seen with the replacement K&N kit 2 replacement parts are supplied but what do they do/ what is there purpose :?: Much abliged for any info and keep up the great work

The sponge inserts are part of the breather system, as is some of the plumbing under the airbox. IMHO, I'd use a standard filter, make sure the carbs are nice and clean and balanced etc, before setting out on the K&N route.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

The standard filter is good and easier to set the jetting than a K&N, it is a good option with the race cans

Yes I agree.
If you do go down the K&N route at sometime you'll more than likely need some spare cash for the dyno runs to get the jetting set correctly, it's not normally a straight forward job. Without getting it set up on a dyno, providing your bikes jetting is standard, fitting a K&N air filter will give a flat spot.

+1, get it running right with standard settings first.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
