Temp Dial Reading?

I know there have been a few posts recently about temp issues and guages, and I hate to repeat anything, but it is just a general query that wasn't covered in the other posts.

I was wondering what the normal postion of the temp needle is on the guage at normal operating temperature of everybody else's Storm?

Not sure if mine has changed recently after a minor strip and clean of the bike over the winter, but I think it used to indicate a sligtly higher temp on the guage than it does now. All connections etc are clean and have good contact and at normal operating temp the needle is indicating at about the 1/4 mark, and if in traffic or idle than when it hits the 1/2 way or just slightly past the fan will kick in.

I know Scotland is cooler (alot at the moment) but is around the 1/4 mark normal for operating temp?

There is not set reading, I believe temp sender is a resistor and not highly calibrated. Mine sits just below the half way mark after messing around with the thermostat housing after a leak, before that it would sit just off the quarter mark.

I had been researching fitting a proper temperature gauge with numbers as the bikes fan should come in around 95 to 98°C, and to date the only one I can see will fit would be one from a ford focus, about the correct size and should fit straight in, this is all theory.

I conclusion as long as your fan cuts in, and you know where on your gauge it does cut in thats all you need.

Would be interesting to see if you manage to sort something along the electronic route for a temp gauge.

When warmed up mine fluctuates around the middle and upwards until the fan kicks in and then goes back down to around the middle.

The other thing to take into consideration is if one has a lower fairing/bellypan. These will increase the heat around the engine and keep your legs warm at the same time.

Mine sits 1/4 or 1/3 under normal use, on a hot day in traffic it will get upto 1/2 and then just above that the fan will kick in when sat at lights on a hot day, very rare in England mind

mine sits just under the first mark on the dial, even after giving it some stick it never goes above this mark..............
