Silencer Gaskets

Quick question if anyone can help please.
When attaching the silencers to the down pipes, what is the correct method for attaching these soft gasket rings?
Do you put them inside the silencer and attach to the downpipes or is it round the outside of the downpipes then attach the silencer?
Is it advisable to use any type of lubricant to make things easier?

put then on the down pipes because iff you do it the other way round you could push them into the exhaust link pipe,and you shouldnt need any kind of lube should just slide on,remember though not all exhaust`s use the gaskets iff there after market ones

I have been considering using gaskets with my system. But don't know if they will fit the gap. If anyone has a micrometer and gaskets could they be so kind to measure the inside and outside diameter for me before I purchase?

Sorry don't mean to thread hijack but as the title is Silencer Gaskets it may be useful for others in future searches.

With regards to your situation Boz, do it the way Spider said but I would add that a bit of exhaust assembly pastes as well does no harm. What Cans have you got and have you got the original link pipes on the bike? Those gaskets as Spider mentioned are made for the original system.

Yeah they are original down pipes with de-baffled stock silencers MacV2 flogged me. Was just checking the fit of the gaskets without damaging them (I know they are soft) and they fit round the downpipe just fine but on one of the silencers it does not look like it will go in without a struggle. I reckon that the clamps have maybe made the end a bit smaller so I'm thinking of heating it a little bit and coaxing it open a little bit more.

Or some burred edges on the pipe. Heating it up should do the trick though. Don't forget to slide your clamps over the pipes before attaching. It's a lot easier than opening the clamps right up to go round the pipe afterwards.

Depends on the set-up - on the standard OEM linkpipe/silencer the gasket goes in the linkpipe. On my old Micron can and linkpipe it didn't use a gasket and relied on an interference fit with the header, but with my Moriwaki the link pipes have a gasket.

Careful when aligning them as the gaskets can get chewed up so push them in straight without any wonkiness.

The graphite seals are about 2-3mm thick, so you'll know if you need them or not.
The pipe flaps around like a flappy thing in a non-conducive environment otherwise.

If it looks to there or thereabouts in terms of fit, a smear of jointing paste or silicon is enough.

Thanks Tony, I think I am going to have to get some. I have used a ton of assembly paste but because of the flappy working environment I will end up having to re-apply. Those gaskets could just be the thing I need. Is it possible to cut a slice out of them to close the circumference up if needs be?

Might be the excuse I'm looking for to remove my headers and clean them up.

You could, but it shouldn't be necessary.
And they might leak anyway, as the integral strength of the gasket is that compressible graphite is set round a soft wire core; the graphite itself won't stay in place or shape if not supported by the core.

If the standard size doesn't work just wrap some (fake) asbestos string round a layer of exhaust sealant, and another layer of sealant on top, you should be able to create a gasket that does the same job as the original but any size you want.

Got a new one in front of me.

Outside diameter is 48mm
Inside diameter is 42mm

Thickness is therefore 3mm.

It is 20mm deep which is exactly the same measurement as the slots in the female end of the linkpipes. I tapped it down with a plastic pipe to clear the gap.
I got lucky and so far, no leaks.

Got it from D Silver. Thinkd they are just over a tenner each with the postage.

I've replaced all mine, damaged one in the process so ordered an extra in case of another botch up.

Fiddly as a fiddly thing to fit. On one of my link pipes it just went on like a dream. Not so the end can ones.
