Pop riveter - anyone near Milton Keynes got one?

Post by BigVeeGrin »

Fitted the carbon fender extender with silicone sealant/adhesive, but given the extender is not a 100% mate to the fender I want to pop (!) a couple of black pop rivets in for peace of mind. Anyone got a gun I can pop (!) round and use one eve or over the w/e.?

Use stainless rivets with a small washer on the back before you tighten them up and pop them.

Small ali ones can wear and work loose, especially with the amount of wheel movement you can get over bumps.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I also have a rivet gun, and rivets, but there must be someone nearby who can help?

Unless you're planning to come to MacV2's WS day, in which case I can take mine and a few rivets.

I will see your rivetter and rivets and raise you some double sided tape and nuts & bolts.

You can fold? In that case I doff my cap sir. You win. I had my Nylock nuts removed due to a slight wound I caught during the battle of Chippenham. Terrible, terrible times, locals armed with passion fruit.

Ah, the passionate fruits of Chippenham cap doffing again. I look back on those times with fondness.

I, too, could not fit the whole tattoo of "New York, London and Peckham" onto my baldrocks in honour of the 90's sitcom about mechanics racing their own creations: "Only Tools and Courses", hence only room for "NYlock".

FPML           nutters, I love it, it makes me feel more normal.

I tried pop riveting mine but they popped out, no good. So settled for capheads as Tony likes to call them or if you me, allen key bolts and a threadlock nut.

Probably a silly question :eh: are you sure stainless steel pop rivets won't split the plastic mudguard :?: after all they tighten up a lot more than the softer alloy ones do.

I used small nuts and bolts for mine with nyloc nuts and washers.
If you decide to do that, make sure you take the mudguard off first before drilling the holes in it, you don't want to be drilling into the tyre

No not a silly question, that is exactly what happened to me Chris. That's why I ended up using nuts n bolts.

Did you use the larger size, with a decent head?
They're generally ok, I find.

I use them for can assembly and repairs/repacks, too.

But you could crack the plastic, I guess, depending on how thick and how brittle it is.
Thermoplastic would probably be ok, thermosetting plastic items less so.

I tried small rivets and they just popped the plastic so I ended up drilling out. I didn't have any larger ones with big heads.
