Fuel Cap Key Removal

Post by c1287 »

so, the fuel cap got harder and harder to open :( , resulting in both keys getting bent, so rather than getting a new key (believe they are chipped, costing £40 ish) I decided to get a new cap. :D The problem lies in that I can't remove the key when the cap is not on the tank. So my only option is to put the new cap on but only have one bike key which is still bent and a bit dodgy. I'm sure there is a simple solution for this, have tried various things like putting the old cap in a vice, just in case the latch needed to be under pressure

Any ideas??

Old style clock ones aren't chipped, I believe the HISS ones are, though.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

WD40 works wonders on fuel caps and ignitions, everytime you clean the bike put a little squirt down the fuel and ignition and read seat locks and your never have a problem with them.

When I first got the VTR1000 the fuel lock wouldnt move and the key looked like it was gonna snap, but I squirted some down there and within mins it turns and locks nicely.

To remove a key from the filler cap when its not in the tank push the alloy ring just inside the rubber seal on the underside of the cap.

Easy peasy

I agree. The only problem with it is that can attract dust and grit to stick. IIRC it's Aluminium sulphate powder that is the recommended lubricant for lock barrels.

To turn the key on my petrol cap after filling up, I have to push it down a bit to turn the key.
