Thanks Kev. This will definitely be an off-season (or rainy day) job for me. Like you, I have wanted to tackle this for some now and well, now is that time. I picked up a spare (read: newer) set of carbs a little while back (mine have over 100,000 miles on them now so will replace them with fresher ones in the next year or so).
During the prep process for the "new" carbs, I will remove the coolant passage feeds and all unnecessary brackets (cut as much useless weight as possible - I replaced the long (105mm) M6 through bolts with Al units (tough buggers to find!) a while back now). I also bought a new DynoJet kit and will be installing that (new springs, needles) as I want the entire set-up to be as "fresh" as possible.
Just out of curiosity, have you compared the weights of the OEM brackets to your carbon copies? If not, you should (and post the results here of course, lol)

Only by holding them mate. I would imagine it would be about the difference between wearing socks on the bike or not!

I just went and weighed the original steel plates at 402g and the Carbon ones at 62g.
Now where's that bar of chocolate, I can eat it now!!!

Well its not so much what i did to my bike as what Benny did,
Short Throw Throttle Mod
TPS set to 489, was at 888
Stick Coils Done and Done Very well by the master, flash git has a Gas Solder
lucky it didn't blow up mind

Indicator wiring sorted
New Spark Plugs (about 3k on last ones)

went back to carls today, to have another tinker with the carbs, we think the poor running was down to a vaccum pipe coming loose under the airbox, but we ended up stripping it all down again and fitting 190 jets front and back(48's slow jets), putting in new dynojet needles, filling in the holes that had been drilled in the diaphram slide thingy majig.
then we re-synched the carbs and put it all back together, we also took carls airbox out to see where my wiring should be routed
took it for a test ride, and its alot smoother low down with a clean pick up, strong thru the middle of the rev range, but its not that great towards the top of the rev range, its a bit woolly, still its an improvement, i think the next step will be some dyno time....

Your welcome mate.
It's just a shame I can't get it all spot on first time, still a learning curve for me trying to get the right ish jet sizes etc. I'm just glad it's an improvement. I suspect filling the extra hole (dynojetted) in the slides has improved the bottom end some.
Now your getting to grips with the odd spanner and screwdriver you should think about re running that last section of wiring loom properly.
At the moment the loom runs above the bar on side of frame alongside the plastic cowl by carbs. That needs re routing below that bar then back up and alongside the headstock and onto fairing bracket. Also the large plastic wiring, for want of a better word, sheath, that's normally by battery (the one the fuel tank light sender goes to) needs re routing.
Fairing off, tank off, air filter off and possibly carbs off and away you go.

Well today I fitted some stick coils to the old girl. All went well with no problems to report. Connected them up and she fired up first time.
I also put in the K&N filter that I have been pondering over fitting as I dont know if I can be arsed buggering around with jetting etc. Will give it a go and can always change back if it aint running well.
Also had a fettle with the TPS. The original reading was 945 ohms which I believe is quite high. Managed to loosen the security bolts with a pair of plumbers grips and enlarged the TPS slots with a chainsaw sharpening file which was ideal for the job. Managed to get the reading down to 476 and got bored so just left it at that.
Connected everything back up and was going to take her for a run but the heavens opened for the first time since last week. Thought I would go and have a glass of red wine instead.
Testing will take place later this week. She feels a wee bit more responsive when I was revving her in the garage so fingers crossed my test run will be hassle free.

lets us know how it rides jazza, carl got my tps down from 800+ to 530ish, my bike now runs smoother at very low revs....

I took a leaf out of Mr Mon's book and tapped the fingers around a little and got it down to 450, without tapping the fingers I could only get 580 so it was worth it, makes a big difference

Anyway, left out in the light rain, gave a good spray of muc-off cleaner, left awhile for a smoke, then a loving sponge, it then pissed down, so nice rinse, into the garage for a towel dry and polish on the tank.
