Idle speed
This has been driving me crazy since Grainstorm, the bike was idleing at 2K so I set it back down to 1.2K next day got bike to work and it kept cutting out once the choke was off, reset the idle, then in them morning when I got him the idle was 1.6k so I have reset it down to 1.4K the manual says 1.2 but it cuts out if I set it that low.
Bit of brainstorming before the weekend when I can take a proper look?.

Re: Idle speed
You've possibly caught the choke cable/ 2:1 tube when reassembling the carbs after checking valve clearances.
If no prob there, I'd suggest a carb balance, as you may have knocked the adjuster- easy to do.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
Re: Idle speed
I have caught the choke cable in the past. From the left side of the bike, make sure the rear choke cable at the carb end runs around the back of the carb, it can all too easily slip around the front under the middle and round when re assembling. You did connect the TPS back up didn't you.
Check the front pipes under airbox as well. You can just feel them with the airbox on, by running your fingers over the front bar and underneath. Make sure the little stubby one went back on squarely.

Cheers Tony, I thought I'd maybe done something like that, I think the choke is fine, sadly I aint got the carb balancers ( next to do ) and its a job I have never done or looked at, but would rather pay an hours labour for carb balance than the labour ro get shims donetony.mon wrote:You've possibly caught the choke cable/ 2:1 tube when reassembling the carbs after checking valve clearances.

Yeah I think its pretty much ok carl, when it was all being assembled, it was being done slowly and there was a couple of us working on it.cybercarl wrote:I have caught the choke cable in the past. Re: Idle speed
Well, the damned bike gives me a different problem every time I start it up, sometimes its ok once warmed up set at 1200 then when I get to work I end up adjusting it again, then when I start up in the morning its the same.
Against, my better wishes I'm going to put it in the shop, got so much work on with the Harley this weekend, they qouted me an hours labour, but I get a good chat and a cup of tea when they put work in the shop so its worth the money.
When the bike is sorted i'm going to service the rest of the stuff on the storm.
Wont need to do any work on next workshop day, but will be great to see someone else have their carbs balanced.

Re: Idle speed
Once a vacuum gauge (Carbtune or similer) is connected up, it's just a case of turning a screw one way or the other and the odd blip on the throttle.Wont need to do any work on next workshop day, but will be great to see someone else have their carbs balanced.

Re: Idle speed
To be honest carl I have never seen it being done or needed to do it. The past 10 year most of the bike I have owned havent had carbs. pre 2000 yeah.cybercarl wrote:Once a vacuum gauge (Carbtune or similer) is connected up, it's just a case of turning a screw one way or the other and the odd blip on the throttle.Wont need to do any work on next workshop day, but will be great to see someone else have their carbs balanced.I'll bring mine along.

Re: Idle speed
I'm always interested to see threads on idle speeds. Mine is, and always has been, set to 900 rpm and it never dies at traffic lights etc. Equally, the carb float overflow pipes are pointing across and not down, as is sometimes suggested, so whilst I don't doubt that people have these problems I have never experienced them in 12 years of ownership!
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Re: Idle speed
Turns out that the rear carb was not seated and had come out again
that gave me and the other guy problems trying to refit, new rubbers I think, also needed to be re balanced.
I said about getting it jetted, they rekon its now running well sweet, as they put it.
