I know its not a storm but any ideas CBR600

Post by TonyW650 »

Hi Guys
wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction.
A freind of mine has a project on the go at the moment, its a cbr400 tri arm with a cbr600 engine in it.
Now ive been sorting out the electrics and repaired the wiring loom and got it running but...
1st gear no problems, box will sh1t right up into 6th gear no issues, but cant get neutral what so ever..
it just goes from 1st straight to 2nd.
question is, could it be any of the following.

1. Worn out clutch
2. to much play in the gear shift linkage or
3. faulty selector on the selector input shaft

what am I missing, will be honest, i'm great with electrics but not to up on mechanics other than the basics, rebuilt a few engines but cant work this one out.
I know its a long shout but thought I would ask as you guys are such a nice bunch off fellows

it would be very cheep to chuck a better engine into it .
has the frame been cut and welded to fit the bigger engine ?
and wait till you get round to the air box that a laugh lol

Sounds like the neutral detent (a spring loaded ball bearing) is not fitted, so there is nothing to stop the selecter drum rotating past N and going to 2nd.

Have a look on the engine exploded view in the parts list to see where it should be

yeah the airbox was fun!
so was getting the wiring loom in and locating the fuse box etc....

frames had the front lower rails cut and rewelded, really nice welding job done actually, engine runs really nicely, have riden it up and down a car park.
But just cant get that neutral!

still a work in progress lloyd, its not mine its a friends bike, shes getting there slowly but its all on a bit of a budget, she purchased it from a trader up in leeds and was lead to believe it was a runner and ready for a MOT, 4 months later......
new rear subframe as original had been mutilated to take a aprilla rs250 tail unit and if any one had sat on it, they would have ended up on the back tyre.
wiring looms was butchered
front end had just been thrown into it.
no fuel tap or pump.
no keys, trader lost them.

them taps are a nightmare to get hold of!
just got to work out what this gear box fault is and we may just have it lol, but she wants to street fighter it and i think it would be more fun with fairings, bit of a giant killer catch a few people out.

If the clutch isn't disengaging properly when pulled in it can make finding neutral difficult.
So try adjusting that first- it's a cable operated one on that, I think?

If not, replace detent spring and possibly shift star. Factory Pro will do a replacement shift star, I would have thought- they seem to have most models covered.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

yep when sorted like mine was it catches most bigger bikes out .
very light and nimble little bikes and when it has a 600 engine in you go from 56bhp to 75-80
nc30 vfr 400 fork lowers and calipers help it stop faster and a cbr 600 rear shock mal gol is the one to have .
chop the dog bone down by 30mm in the middle this works a treat .
i used all the 600 electrics when i did mine but shortened it at the front a little .
the rev counter fits in the 400 clocks with a little help .
