Front fork internals: Now sorted

Post by Flatline »

I need to remove the silver part at the bottom

It is supposed to come off easily, but it doesn't

Any suggestions on how to remove it?

Sensible is good

Not sensible is funny

You choose :problem: :problem: :problem:

I don't know how for sure as I have not investigated the internals of my forks yet. But from that picture it looks like the bolt in the end holds that on. So is it supposed to just slide off :confused It would be a tight fit!

How about an adjustable spanner, not closed to the point of clamping around. But just above the silver thing there is a lip, so put the spanner above that sitting on the lip and give the spanner a tap with a hammer to knock the silver thing off. You will need a third hand to hold your rod (I think I will rephrase that  ) Get someone to hold the rest of it as you will need two hands. One to hold the spanner and one for the hammer.

And check to see if there is a circlip around the inside of that lip or it might have a metal ring like on the top of the forks.

Thanks for reply

The bolt on the bottom is not part of it

There is an allen bolt that goes up the fork leg to hold it down

I am reliably informed that it should drop off :eek2

Need I rephrase that?

It's made of alloy so very soft

Slidehammer

What you need is a fork seal tool/driver, or something round and hollow to slide over the other end of the tube down onto the lip, and knock it off. Or do as I suggested above. You cold always wrap it in a rag to protect it somewhat and be gentle. Well gentle to start with until you get pissed off with it.

they should readily pull off after removing the bolt, but be very careful as they break quite easy, dont try to use anything with teeth ie pliers , as these will mark them and bugger em up. afraid its a case of pulling the offending item.try wrapping a rag around your hand and then twisting and pulling at the same time.

if it should just pull off you could try one of those rubber wrenches with the strap like a boa constrictor to put around it and then pull it off.

something like this

we use one for opening jar lids :)

hope this helps :D

Had the fork internal with me in the van just in case I came across someone to help, and I did

He has a new piece of kit that heats the end up without flame

So, job done
