Low revs and running with one cylinder

Ok. As always, problems start to arise when you are about to make something bigger. Such as longer trip...

So, I changed air filter. There was some "oily dirt" inside the box, and I tried my best to clean it. Also I cleaned those two little foam pads (why in earth these don't come with air filter when buying new?) with gasoline (yep, not the best way, but I didn't have anything else available). I did also try to change spark plugs, but the spanner didn't fit, so no luck there.

And now problems started.
After driving a while with low revs, such as 3500 or so for a while, suddenly it seems that other cylinder just dies. And the bike jumps like a one legged kangaroo forward. And of course, power is gone as other cylinder is dead.

Any ideas where to start?
Or even better, has anyone experienced the same and solved the problem?

Did you take your tank off to do the filter? If so have you put the pipes back in the correct place on the fuel tap mate?

If you removed the HT leads from the plugs, you have probably not put one of the leads back on securely. Check whether you put them back on properly. They can be a bit tight sometimes you should hear and feel them click back onto the top of the plug.

Just check you put the vacuum hose to the rear of the tap, when you put the tank back on the bike!

The vacuum pipe goes to the outlet on the fuel tap at the 9 o'clock position, not the one poking straight down.

I still think HT lead not seating properly as there is no mention of popping and banging. But Both things are easy to check and don't cost anything.

Petrol taps can be such prima donnas. Any odd demands for dressing room must-haves?

Mine insisted on fresh peaches flown in that day from Bolivia. Nightmare!

Hmm. Vacuum tube might really be on the wrong place at the bottom of the fuel tap!

I am going to borrow the tools from the lab and check that today at coffee break. If this works I own a beer for Tony.mon and Carl. Awesome picture Carl.

Also from that picture I now actually understand how the rubber flap thingie is supposed to be attached...

You wouldn't believe the amount of people who have put the vacuum in the wrong place. Credit for the picture should go Jazzscot as it's one of his I pinched.

That rubber flap thingie is there in case there is a leek, to attempt to stop fuel from dripping down on the rear header pipe.

Seems to work. The vacuum tube was indeed attached to a wrong place.

Back from work with only low revs, tried every trick I could think of to make things difficult for the carburetors. And no problems! At least not yet.

I own now couple of beers for Tony.mon and Carl. And credit to the whom it belongs, so thanks for the Jazzcot about the picture.


Thank you all for your help! This was really great relief. I was already calculating the costs to balance the carburetors, go through the electrical system and the beer involved. And that picture was not cheap!
