Noisy engine
Noisy engine
Right after my engine on tick over post, I've now noticed that its knocking more and there's a definite top end knock when you give a slight rev, if you give it a bigger rev it goes but if just giving the throttle a blip then you can notice it.
Is there anyone on here in or around south Wales that knows enough to take a look, a mate said he thinks it maybe the cam chain tensioner ?
Thanks in advance Gav

Re: Noisy engine
Why not take it to AMcQ's Workshop day?
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Re: Noisy engine
If the bike has the original CCTs then you want to look at doing something about sooner rather than later anyway. You could have a sickie from worka mate said he thinks it maybe the cam chain tensioner ?

Some links regarding the Cam Chain Tensioners (CCT's)
CCT's can go at any time, it's a gamble!
You can either go for the stop mod View Topic http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 31&t=19416 Which is the Honda auto CCT's that are converted to a fail safe. So when it does fail, it don't send the valves crashing.
Or
You go for the full manual conversion, your options are here http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 16&t=22720
Then with regards to fitting View Topic View Topic http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=8326
To see if it has been done have a look at the CCT's on bike. Is there a thread coming out the end with a locknut. If so then manuals are installed.

Re: Noisy engine
Right so I went to thunder road today to get a second apinion on the knocking, when I started it this morning it was doing the same as last couple of days and by the time I got to thunder road and one of the staff came out to take a look it had totally gone ????
I tried doing the little revs to show him but nothing and I now seems to of gone ? I'm confused lol
The guy at thunder road gave me some advice and explained a few things to me about th bike as he has had a few vtr's himself and said if it was anything to worry about then he would be able to tell. I asked about cam chain and he said there's no noise that points to that so I'm baffled as to what it was.
The bike has ridden normal there and back it's around 80 mile round trip.
I guess it's just get on with riding it for now and enjoy it

Re: Noisy engine
Entirely up to you.
CCT's fail with very little warning, if any, so for real peace of mind get them changed.
But some people report that they've had no probs for years, who knows, you may be one of the lucky ones.

Re: Noisy engine
I agree with what people say on here, I am now on my second VTR1000 Firestorm, and if I got another one the first thing I would do is fit the manual CCTs, for the price and the time its going to take to do the work, its well worth it, better than smashing valves and having a dead bike with an expensive bill or a lot of work for you to get it back on the road.
We wouldnt like you to come back on here with the familiar story of " I was out the other day and there was a loud clacking noise noise from the bike followed by a........."

Re: Noisy engine
The price varies mate, Bazza696 is probably your cheapest option with his converted autos to manuals. Next up is Rider on a Storm who manufactures his own (I have these fitted on mine). APE, Krieger are both US based and sell very similar products on E Bay along with a guy called PhilPont.
Pays your money and take your pick mate.

Re: Noisy engine
I bought mine from Rider on a Storm because they were available when I needed them and they were well recommended. I was very pleased with the aesthetics of them and their performance, but Rider isn't always on here and may not have some ready. Bazza's are normally available double quick and are good value, with the bonus that the front is easier to adjust, when fitted, than any of the other types.
Give the guys a shout and see who can help you out mate.

Have a read through Tony's review, he has the most experience of these things -

Have a read through these insytructions Gav. They are really comprehensive and will lead you through the process. Even if you decide to get someone else involved at least you can show them this guide -

I did mine in a couple of hours if I remember right.
