Noisy engine
Re: Noisy engine
Cheers Kev still frightens me to death doing major stuff like that I'm ok at normal servicing and general stuff but really don't like playing with anything to do with the engine lol

Honestly it's not as traumatic as you would imagine. Print off the instructions and read them over a few times, gather all the bits together and read them again then set the bike up on a stand whilst reading the instructions again. Basically read the instructions, a lot.
If you get in the cack post on here and someone will chip in.

Re: Noisy engine
I would just like to add to that, if following those instructions and ONLY if replacing with manual CCTS then disregard number 10 and don't go near the Haynes manual it will confuse you.
If fitting manuals, as long as you have set things to TDC, it is safe to undo the old auto CCT bolts, each one a bit at a time and remove the old CCT. When putting the manuals in, you can then check the tension on the chain by eye with a tape measure as the cam/rocker cover will be off anyway.
I would also advice taking the extra time to remove the front cam/rocker cover and check that by eye as well.
Do you research first, read all the posts on CCT's and you shouldn't have any problems.

Re: Noisy engine
Hi, this is a fairly straight forward job, no special tools required, lots of guides with photos on the net, normally the front cylinder CCT is the first to wear out, change then both while you're at it, just remember to check the timing of the chain, on my bike the inlet valve was one tooth wrong when I opened it. I concidered going for the manual APE one's but ended up with the improved originals from http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/ they wil set you back about 60£. Good luck ! This job was really straight forward and logical, expect to use about 2-3 hours, depending on your experience, a friend at your side will always help, but is'nt necessary.
Re: Noisy engine
Improved originals? Does such a thing exist? I thought the accepted belief was that Honda copped out and left them as was. Basically a ticking timebomb!

Re: Noisy engine
That seems to be the thoughts on here and the Superhawk site amongst many others. And to be honest If one was purchasing Honda Auto's from david silvers or any other parts dealer. Surly you would not be able to tell when the CCT was madeI thought the accepted belief was that Honda copped out and left them as was

Re: Noisy engine
Having taken loads of these apart to do stopper mods etc, I have never seen any variation in the standard CCT.
There's no such thing as an "improved" one, unless anyone can show me what the modification is, how it makes the original design better, and how top tell it form an old design one?
Consider the gauntlet thrown.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
Re: Noisy engine
I agree with Tony on this. I've heard people say they've been told the standard CCT's have been modified by Honda. Some seem to think the spring has been heat treated differently to help stop them from shearing off (if that was the case then I don't suppose you would see any difference by eye Tony), but I have yet to see any proof of this in writing.

I met a member off the forum (name excluded to protect the guilty!!) in an East Anglia location who had a 2002 Storm. Despite all the evidence to the contrary he insisted that the later facelift Storms had an uprated CCT. I questioned this and he had no reason or evidence to support this argument, just a belief.
