Post by kneelee »

Hi all, how is everyone? hope your getting some miles in between the bad weather.

Well my VTR let me down yesterday :( the battery overheated after a long ride out and after making lots of noises and vapour it died when parked up. I think the battery cooked its self.

Has anyone got any idears to what might of happened i would be very greatful

Thanks

Yes, your regulator/rectifier has failed, and it's putting out far too much voltage- often up to 40 volts. This, as you say, cooks (boils) the battery.
At the very least you'll need a replacement RR, but very probably a new battery as well.

Meter the output to the battery when the engine's running, anything over 14.5 volts when you rev the engine will support my diagnosis.

However it's also worth metering the alternator outputs. Haynes tells you how, or it's in the Workshop Knowledgebase on here.

When you replace the RR, fit one with fins, as the smooth-surfaced older ones are less reliable.
Again, the knowledgebase tells you how to convert a Yamaha one, or you can just plug'n'play a Honda 125 one.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Hi, I recall the smell of bad eggs when this happened to me, you'll find a replacement one on ebay, I would suggest that you'd go for the Yamaha regulator modification as these cope with more heat than the original Honda part. You'll find the info about this in varoious sites on the internet. Best of luck !
