HID headlight conversions

Post by TonyW650 »

Hey guys,

been looking at a hid conversion for the storm, but how does the law stand with them, I read that technically they are illegal as the head light has to be self adjusting etc....so cant be fitted as a retro, but then read that the plod generally wont do anything and that the mot only checks for head light alignment etc and wont fail on having a hid kit fitted.
Is it another one of them legal to sell them illegal to use them jobs?

I know the storms headlight is pants, and thought doing a hid conversion was a good idea, but what is the legality ?

3points and a £60 fine if you get pulled .
It's better to fit a eastern beaver relay kit

Didn't we have this topic not so long ago. And IIRC I think the conclusion was that on cars they are illegal but not on bikes as of yet.

Still illegal mate on bikes unless factory fitted or have a self leveling device, same as cars

Mot fail

And on the vehicle they can be used with they have to be in a projector lens

100 watt bulb with a relay is also not road legal

They are xenon bulbs, halfrauds direct replacements not HID. The HID's are a whole kit with ballast resisters and stuff.

Eatern Beaver replay kit is the way to go, fitted with standar bulbs I have had comments on how bright they are, so never bothered fitting the 100 watt bulbs intended.

i didnt think the hid was any better anyway, road signs lit up better but thats about it,unless it was just a cheap crappy kit i had.i had one on my storm when i bought it and took it off,ran a normal h4 bulb in it until i got my twin lamp kit.plus theres a couple of boxes and wiring to try and hide.

I had the 4300 kelvin Fitted direct in the headlight It was super bright pure white light

Mega difference over the stock but as it was not in a projector housing the light was scatted and was blinding people

i got pulled one night and was shitting it but thankfully got away with that one, took the off after that.

If i was to do it again i would do it properly with a a HID projector mounted inside the headlight, tho this would still be illegal it should work as a normal HID in a Modern car would, would probably still fail an mot mind?

No mention of HID not being allowed in the MOT manual. They seem more concerned about lights not being bright enough and the aim.

Where as for cars they do get a mention and are required to have a levelling device.
