Blowing exhaust.......
I have MiG end cans on, & recently the clamp bolt needed replacing, but it is still blowing. Does anyone know if these should have a sealing ring in? The mechanic that looked at it reckons it won't fit as it's an aftermarket exhaust but it's still too loud even for me...

Where is it blowing from?Stevo Kifaru wrote:I have MiG end cans on, & recently the clamp bolt needed replacing, but it is still blowing. Does anyone know if these should have a sealing ring in? If it is blowing from the the point at which the link pipes join the headers then yes it needs a gasket.

New clamps are available from Arco cheaper than OEM parts.
As for the mechanic.....Fubar! I have Harris cans & still use that gasket, IMO it would only not fit if the link pipes were a different diameter, which then would not fit full stop.
When you say it's to loud for you, either start wearing ear plugs, buy baffles for the pipes or change the pipes.

Had the same problem. Cured with some of the following...

Worked for me anyways...

Good stuff Firegum but it does break down and crumble within a few months, especially if it gets wet.
Another option is heat resistant silicone gasket sealer

I don't understand how anyone can have loud cans.

Re: Blowing exhaust.......
Lol, it's not the cans, they're sweet sounding, it's the downpipe to exhaust clamp/, specifically the left one which is a bit of a bitch to get to. So does the gasket go inside the downpipe or between the downpipe & pipe to the can? I tried working out from looking at the Haynes manual but I reckon you'll already know the result of that one. I have two OE clamps I got cheap off ebay as the previous one rotted away, & I've already put one on but it doesn't seem to have quelled the noise
I live in a village and regularly come home at 4or5 in the morning and the tractor like noise emanating from the downpipe is a bit anti-social! I just want that lovely purr back.........

Re: Blowing exhaust.......
Got the irony cybercarl, it was more of a clear that one up statement....
Looking at the blueprint, the gasket/packing muffler goes over the down pipe & under the exhaust/endcan pipe. In which case the mechanic was right as those MiGs are a tight fit without it. I'm going to get him to have a better look at it tomorrow when he changes the tyres, as he'll have it on a paddock stand/hoist. Maybe the pipe has cracked somewhere else cos it seems to get louder after a few miles......

I don't use those gaskets on mine either with my custom Sp1 style Arat's, no space for them. If you put your hand over the end of the cans while it is running, have a good feel around with your hands for any leaks and listen for any hissing. Do it when the bike is cold and not fully warmed up. Be careful Don't burn your hands it soon warms up.
