Service for a 10 year old bike - what needs attention?

Post by Rob »

Had the bike since new, so know the history... (Currently on 22.5K)

It's obviously had consumables replaced as and when.
Regular oil/filter changes. K&N air filter.
Regular brake/clutch fluid replacement.
Original R/R but just bought a CB125 one on eBay so will change that.
CCT's changed as a precaution probably 3 years ago - but replaced with Honda ones... (Valve clearances checked at the same time - they were fine)

I'm thinking I need to do a bit more this winter.

Fork oil has never been changed. Will do that. (Might need a bit of advice on that nearer the time!)
Rear suspension linkage never stripped. Will do that.
Head bearings replaced once but with roller bearings - not tapered. Probably leave that and fit tapered next time it needs it.

Wheel bearings are original - seem fine, is it worth changing them anyway?
Will change the oil/filter/plugs, clean K&N at 24K.

Considering the age more than the mileage and the fact it's been used in all weather is there anything else I should be checking/changing?

Can do most stuff myself but have a mate who's an ex mechanic/engine rebuilder who will help. (He changed the CCT's for me)

Sorry for the epic post, thanks for any help :D

It might be worth putting stoppers in your ccts mate.

How's the sprockets looking for wear?

Have you had it re- jetted with you saying you have a k&n filter?

If wheel brgs don't rumble when spinning, and have no slack, they will be fine. But you could do to change the coolant.
Fork oil and linkage are your priority.

Oh and predictably I have to recommend you do the stopper mod on your CCTs

Sprockets and chain changed for a D.I.D x-ring one at about 16K.

Coolant - yes definitely, thanks.

Yes it's been re-jetted.

CCT's. Hmm maybe if there's another Workshop day this year I'll come. What's best, stoppers or manually adjusted? Doubt they would need adjusting often - is it a case of waiting for symptoms or a regular check with the manual ones?

Looks like not too much to do then :D Doesn't look great, salt has taken it's toll, but runs like new. Might get a few things like forks, swingarm & rear seat bracket powder coated.

My commute is now too long for winter use so should avoid anymore salt but regularily ride in the rain.

I've just bought a huge bag of s/s bolts off ebay as well so will change as many as I can.

Thanks for the suggestions :D

It is pretty corroded. Not sure I want to risk touching it unless I have to. 8O

You will want to check the starter motor wiring as well if you have done 10 yrs of all weather riding. The main power terminal will be corroded to feck and need replacing.

Will check the starter motor connections - it does look pretty shitty down there!

What about the drive chain slider? Do they usually were and if it's worn will it be obvious?

No, they'll outlast the bike.

Replace the cush drive rubbers if it hasn't already been mentioned.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Even if they look fine? Do they get compressed with use?

I'll replace them anyway. Can't really moan about spending a few quid on it after 10 years of reliable service :D

When you pull them out you'll probably find that they are a loose fit in the hub,m and maybe the linking sections of plastic will have snapped.

You might as well replace, if the bike hasn't had much care and attention for a while.
As you say, they're not expensive.

rear suspension linkage will probably be a nightmare , bolts siezed in swingarm etc and bearings shot.pins worn too.(well was with both my storms anyway) a site called simply bearings is good for linkage bearings, seals and stuff.much cheapness and quick delivery too.
