When I say shims they are basically washers which are about 20th of an inch thick. I believe the clip positions on needles are about 40th inch apart. So for example, say that you tried a clip position 5 and felt it was a bit rich so tried 4 and felt it was to lean, you could add another washer which is 20th inch which would land you somewhere between the two clip positions for really precise tuning. Hope that makes some kind of sense.

So if you had a 180 main in the front and a 185 in the rear which more than likely will be OK. If you felt you could do with a 182 rather than the 185, maybe compensate for the slight larger main jet by leaning out the needle height. You should have the stock shim/washer under the e clip on each needle, but there is no reason why you can not either adjust the clip position or add 1 more washer to one of the needles so it's slightly different to the other carb.

    If I had my micrometer in front of me I would tell you, but I haven't. So I'm going by what I have learnt from reading Hawks set up on shimming over the pond. Or is that skimming over the pond

It's funny because I was brought up in the era of pounds and inches and then later things got metricated. So I tend to use both depending on what I'm doing. But a bakers dozen is still 13.

Tony will tell you what it is in whitworth

Yup, and BSF, even British Pipe Thread if you want.

I learnt at school in inches, feet and yards, but as soon as I started work, just after they'd change money to decimals, I used metric all the time.

Nowadays, I think in mm for distances up to the length of a ruler, yards for how far you are from a bend, and miles for gallons* of fuel to last until you've reached the end of.

*Imperial gallons, of course, we took over the entire world and then gave it all back, except for the Isle of Man and the Gallon.

1mm is just under forty thou.
39.4, as I recall without checking.

Just checked; it's 1 millimetre = 39.3700787 thou.
Roughly.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Thanks Carl, Iv ordered the jets so can't wait to start playing!

I'm planning on using the standard needles and using shims to lift them to where the fuelling feels right... :-( :-)
