It's shaped that way to protect the shock but not hide the rear downpipe.
That's where I decided it's meant to go. The only problem I can see is that the standard one iirc makes contact with the swingarm. Chric, your bike has a hugger fitted. Normally going on you remove that shock protector when you fit a hugger.

And just to confirm the standard plastic one does make contact with the swingarm. I looked this afternoon at the one removed from my bike, it definitely has rub marks on it from the arm,chric wrote: cheers did not think of that so canceld bid
