First Impressions

Post by mr.john.coates »

I'm now the proud owner of a VTR1000 Firestorm
And it's blue

First impressions are - wow, all that power, especially after coming from a 650 Deauville! It's light and handles well, and I found the steering nice and precise. The mirrors are rubbish, though and I'll need to sort that. Apart from that I'm loving it! What a find the Firestorm is, a lot of quality bike for not much money.

Could someone advise me of the tickover speed? - It's 1000 at present and it cut out a couple of times when idling so I think it's too low.

Finally, what is the purpose of gears number 4 and 5 ? - I found I only needed up to number 3.

(BTW my bike's called 'Norman' - Stormin' Norman - My son asked how fast it was so I had to lie in case he told Mum)

well done, I've only ridden mine a few times, but it is fun and definitely a step up from my previous bike.

i can't help on the tickover, but someone will be a mon, i mean along soon to help :D :D

my pal dropped my forks by about 10mm to increase the turn in and he fitted some manual cam chain tensioners, but i'm guessing you've sussed all that already. have fun in the sun :)

From the searchable Honda service PDF manual: > http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 31&t=18025

1,100 +/- 100 min-1 (rpm)

When were your carbs last balanced?

There can be a carb stumble/fart that is perfectly normal - some folk go up to 1200 to stop it happening.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

1100- 1200 rpm is the norm. You will find a Black round knob on the right hand side of the front carb. You can gain access through the frame near the rad. Turn this either clockwise or anticlockwise to raise or lower the idle speed while the bike is running. It's a good idea to do it when the bike has fully warmed up otherwise it will be too high when the bike is at full running temp.

Mirrors are a pain, you can either put some IIRC R6 mirrors on which have a slightly longer stem and higher angle or you can get mirror extenders.

4th and 5th gears you could think off as an overdrive, a bit like 5 gear on a car. It's there to conserve fuel.

Enjoy Stormin around. Oh and stick your location in you user control panel. If you have any problems people near by may other assistance where needs be.

And when you have found 4th and 5th you might as well try 6th . :-)

Sounds like you had fun, worth remembering how much mid range torque these bikes have and seeing how much drive you get in 4th and 5th as well.

There are times when I am out playing and going for it when I go to change up only to find I am already in top, it pulls well above 5000 revs even in the high gears :D
