Evening all.
Swapped the match box R&R back in 2008 with one from Electrex. This then gave up October last year. Bought another one from Electrex and this gave up two weeks ago. Sent it back to Electrex and currently waiting for a replacement.
Whilst waiting I decided to buy another one from David Silvers (pattern part with fins).
Fitted it earlier this week and checked the voltage which was 14.7v. Went for a ride today and checked it again when I got home, its now showing 13.7v.
Thought I should check the stator coils, specification says 0.2 to 0.5 ohms. My voltmeter shows 2 ohms on the 2K setting.
This where I am confused is that right or wrong? Wanted to check this as this could be the problem and not the R&R, could the alternator be frying the R&R's?
Also the wires on the connector under the seat look to be getting rather hot because the wires have gone brown.
Any advice gratefully received.
Cheers
Mike
R&R or Alternator
Re: R&R or Alternator
Iv got a spare set of alternator coils in the garage that I can check for you mate.
Edit, just back in from the garage mine is reading 001 on 2000 ohms

Re: R&R or Alternator
Wires on connector go brown due to the connectors not being clean; a poor connection due to corrosion on the terminals reduces the current being passed, increases resistance and so produces heat.
If you're lucky the heat burns off the corrosion (arcing across) and remakes a good connection. If not....
Wrong range selection on ohm meter. You're trying to measure .2 on a 2000 scale, it won't be accurate.
Try a 0-10 scale.
Meter across all three alternator windings (yellow wires). If all the same, you're ok.
14.7V dropping to 13.5 is fine.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
Re: R&R or Alternator
Got a new multimeter coming tomorrow which measures down to 0.1 ohms. My current one is a bit cheap and only goes down to a 2K setting.
I'll be giving the terminals a good clean then and a dose of vaseline or something similar.
Cheers for the advise.

Have a look here http://easternbeaver.com/Main/Elec__Pro ... ctors.html they sell upgraded cables and connectors etc for RR's
And here's a good link for charging system testing procedures, it may be useful to you http://www.triumphrat.net/speed-triple- ... grade.html I know it's a triumph forum, but the principle is the same.

Thanks for the link, is there somewhere in the UK I can get upgraded wiring and connectors?
Or if someone knows the best place for connectors and I can sort the wiring out myself.
Electrex have returned my R&R saying its not faulty. I believe the fault lies in the wiring, I need to replace wires from the connector block under the seat to the R&R. Took the bike for a spin today and when I got back home, the wires were stuck to the plastic shroud, obviously getting too hot due to bad connections.
I did clean up the spade connections and applied vaseline etc. but the wires are only crimped to the connectors and the wire has deteriorated due to the heat as it has gone almost black, therefore causing a bad connection.
Cheers

Re: R&R or Alternator
This place is very good. A small family run business with a very fast and efficient service. Not as posh as Easternbeaver but they have a reasonable selection of connectors, wiring etc.

I used Kojacat to get the connectors to make the stick coil looms, very helpful.

Re: R&R or Alternator
Funnily enough I have just bought some shrink wrap and stuff to do my stick coils as well. And to stock up my supplies, fuses, unsullting tape etc etc
