Backfire/Popping

Post by WoodyNZ »

Hey team

I rode my newly acquired firestorm yesterday and it has a small backfire/pop sometimes when you close the throttle and sometimes when you reopen the trottle, at low speeds I think.

My heart sank when I heard this because my Aprilia Tuono was bad for this and the bike mechanics never really solved it.

It is a 2002 model with scorpion pipes and the old owner said it has been re jetted to suit.

I have also been told from a Bike Mechanic that it is a "V-Twin thing"

Is this correct? Should I just accept this or is it NOT normal and I should get it looked at? Does anyone else's VTR do this?

Thanks for your advice.

Woody.

I have Scorpions on my bike too, I agree a little popping on the overrun is normal.

A little popping on the overun as you lay off the throttle is normal. But if it's excessive you may want to check there are no exhaust leaks around the seals as this will make it worse.

It's not just a v-twin thing mate, I had an R6 with a Micron can on it and that used to do the same!

Used to get a jet of blue flames out of it lol!

Although the storm does sound a lot better! Just ENJOY ;-)

As others said poping is no problem, and the backfire thing can be fun, Don't do it if you've got carbon cans though ! (can't do it on madern fuel injected bikes due to fuel cut off)

Most modern inline fours pop and bang all the time you just don't hear it as it's absorbed by the catalytic converter, remove that and they pop alot more than the firestorm, this is due to the air bleed system on modern bikes which bleeds air from the airbox into the exhaust header to burn off any unburnt fuel for emissions purposes. there are ways to reduce it or stop it altogether though..
