powder coating
powder coating
I know many of you have had your wheels powder coated and I'm interested in what it cost....from shot blasting the wheels to powder coating them? I've just had a couple of eye watering quotes through from local specialists, well at least I think they are expensive but the truth is I've no idea what I should be paying and how hard I should hunt for a decent price....presuming it is out there somewhere.
So to gain some perspective on whether or not I should get this process done or look for an alternative, what did some of you pay to get this done? Oh and by the way, the 2 quotes I have had for shot blasting and powder coating with no repair required are £300 plus VAT and £460 plus VAT. My spider senses were kinda telling me that I might pay about £70 per wheel plus VAT. Is that optimistic?

Have a look at my thread in http://www.haymouth.co.uk/phpBB3/viewto ... 59#p183316
If they're cheaper I'll have 10% of the saving as a finders fee.
Those quotes tell me they didn't want to do the job......

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
Re: powder coating
depends on finish but company down here offer's shotblasting and one coat powdercoating for £95 a pair of wheels, so them quote's sound a bit excessive

Re: powder coating
Mention my name and the forum when you book, if you book.
It helps that they know the owners on here send their stuff to them; it's due to some volume that I got the prices that I did.
That was before Christmas, though, so you might find they've gone up a mite.
Blank off the bearings well- I used a length of studding and two very large washers through each wheel, as masking tape might not survive the bead blasting process.

Re: powder coating
That's very cheap Tony. Can they do fluorescent colours as well?
When I enquired about powdercoating to a firm IIRC they quoted me about £100 a pair. Those quotes you got Boz are way too high. Your spider senses are working well mate.

Re: powder coating
Yes, but if they had to order in it'll be added to the bill, whereas they do black gloss and semi-gloss all day, so it'll be cheaper.cybercarl wrote:That's very cheap Tony. Can they do fluorescent colours as well?
It's the changeover form one colour to another that adds to the cost, so I'm told. cleaning the gun and spray booth so that any dust doesn't ruin the finish.

Re: powder coating
Cheers Tony, good info mate. That at least is a good reference for a bargaining tool knowing what it should be. Obviously I would for convenience sake want to get this done round my way so knowing this info at least makes me look like less of a lemon now. Failing that, I have a cunning plan. I have in laws from my first marriage in Dagenham (lived there for many years....yep i know!!!!). One of them is visiting my kids in 2 weeks and he could be persuaded to take them down and pop them to Dartford for me. It would then be the case of return post costs only which at your mates rates, would be totally acceptable to pay out. Will post my progress and mention you to the fella Tony

Next year I want to go Flurecent yellow/green, more on the yellow side than green. A bit like a dayglo jacket. I shall bookmark that firm Tony. Nice one.

Re: powder coating
I had 5 car wheels done earlier this year. Shotblasted, repaired all damage (Remanufactured) and powder coated for £50 each.
These wheels were a mess but rare and all I could find, but they came back probably about 95% perfect....
Maybe a bike wheel might be a little more as it's not 1 sided, but not that much!

Re: powder coating
PPS in Inverurie do them for about £40 to £50 a wheel.
I keep meaning to take a pair up the to get done.
If it helps, I have a spare pair you could use to get done so yours isn't off the road for too long.
Are you going to be renewing the bearings and seals at the same time?

Re: powder coating
Cheers for the heads up. I aint too bothered about the bike being off the road as there are quite a few bits to get done to it over the course of a couple of weeks. Yes I am intending to do the seals/bearings at the same time, would be daft not to. Thanks for the offerRichy wrote:PPS in Inverurie do them for about £40 to £50 a wheel.

Re: powder coating
Good news everybody. I found an industrial powder coating firm right under my nose, about quarter mile from my front door. Quoted me 50 smackers per wheel including sand blasting the old colour off. Well happy with that.Gonna replace all the seals/bearings at the same time....then getting me a comfort kit to ease my aching back. Got lots more planned, flip up screen, new saddle, scotoiler, new chain/sprockets etc to do over the winter. Its gonna look awesome
