Gearbox noise, opinions please

2003 VTR1000, 15Kmiles
Good chain and sprockets

problem: 'shush shush shush shush' noise at all rpm only in certain gears

only does it under load

not present in 1st or 5th
mild in 2nd and 4th
loud in 3rd
really loud in 6th

I suspect that a gear support collar , a thrust washer is worn or a circlip stop ring has failed, the various gears appear to ride on these collars as opposed to being on needle roller bearings like 1st gear is

an experience of this , a search didn't throw anything up

Could be a selector or selector fork problem, but I'm afraid you'll have to strip the engine to find out.

Because it only affects certain gears, I'd be thinking about the large bearing behind the clutch basket, which has failed on one of my engines before.

Pull the clutch cover off and see how much play there is on the basket itself- some will be play on the clutch basket centre bearing, but behind that is a large ball bearing set in the crankcases.

Hey just noticed the same noise on my 04 mod, exactly as you discribed it, did you find the problem?

Do you have a rear hugger fitted ?, Huggers can cause a resonance if the chain is adjusted a bit too tight, if you have one fitted slacken your chain off a bit and see if the noise goes away.
