Pain in knees when riding

Post by Ckennedy »

Evening all.

Never thought to post this before now. Went on a ride to Wales the other weekend and the tip there on the storm was fantastic. Had a great day out un-till I rode back. I kept getting really bad pains in my knees. So bad I was having to stop every 30-40miles as I was in so much pain. They had been fine all day. On the way there I stopped at Uttoxeter for breakfast, Llangollen for a drink as it started to rain, Ponderosa cafe for a cream tea and scone and then on to Betws-y-coed for a hours rest inc lunch and a walk around. But on the way back constant pain in my knees. Could not explain it. Never happened before on either the storm or the SV I have had and I have done more miles than that before now. Could it be bike related??? If so are there any mods I could make? lower foot pegs, new set with the rubber strip or even a new screen as I have read the double bubbles can cause problems for some riders. I do not really get trouble with my hands just my knees now. By the way for any of you thinking it is age........ I am only 21

Any tips that will not cost a lot of money in case none of them work?

You could try lower footpegs. Its cropped up on the US Superhawk.com forum if you do a search, though you'll obviously lose ground clearance.

Could be worth mentioning it to your GP as it sounds an odd symptom caused by just riding the Storm.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

i have had bad knees for years and im 33 and the best advice i can give is to stretch ,
bend down and touch you toes keeping you legs straight .
this has helped me with my knees and my lower back .
when you are riding for a long time and with a little walk in between your ligaments are tightening up ,
so keep them supple and you should be fine .
and get some exercise you lazy youth

I had looked at those foot pegs already but was unsure on the ground clearance. I was thinking about some thin billet pegs and the would lower my foot by a few mill? But then thought the vibrations would cause a bigger problem.

I try to keep moving on the bike, standing up and moving my legs ect when I can. Shall try doing it more off the bike too. Just found it odd as it only happened on the storm. Might have to do some measuring on the SV and compare as it is still in the family :D see if there is a difference or not. As for exercise..... Well having the breed of dog that I have means I get nothing but exercise haha. At least 2hours or walking/running a day after being on my feet all day at work. I will admit, I used to do a lot more that walking and running but do have a problem with my left knee as it is which drs have not managed to sort but it was also my right knee giving me grief too.

Damp conditions and a damp atmosphere cause knee pain more than any riding position. In Spain we have 9 months dry riding conditions followed by 3 months of Damp/wet.

I have learnt to keep as warm and dry as I possibly can in. winter When I have misjudged it and got damp/wet knees - Pain Pain Pain - like a tooth ache in my knees!

I used to get that sort of problem. I cured bad knees by going to the gym and using the Roman Chair (leg extensions), amongst other leg exercises. Worked for me.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

You could try making the seat taller giving more leg room, currently looking at this my self, feels like I'm sat to low and legs to far forward currently with the stock setup

Shock spacer could help possibly. Also Glucosamine with chondroitin or Cod liver oil.

Another angle to look at is the to do the bar conversion this will raise your body & create less of a crouch posture.

Now you mention it, it may have had something to do with getting damp. It did rain just before we got to llangollen. Did not feel overly to wet but it could have been a factor. I believe I have the 3mm spacer under the rear shock which was fitted by the bloke before me.

How would you go about raising the seat? only problem I would have then is that I would need staberliser to hold me up right when I come to a stop as I can not reach the floor with out shifting my elbow off the edge of the seat haha. By the way I am 5ft 9inch so only a short butt.

I have Arthritis in my knee which certainly is worse in the damp and cold. This is why I mentioned Glucosamine which helps.

I might have to give it a try if it persists. I am assuming it takes a while for it to take effect?

It's like most vitamins and supplements, you don't feel the benefit straight away, but do after a couple of weeks. I don't take it all year round, but when the Winter months arrives it greatly improves things for me. Try eating more oily fish as well. Good for the bones and joins.
