Im getting my tank sprayed tomorrow hopefully and Iv just thought of something :-)

I will be putting my sender on the new tank from my current tank, should I need to bend my float rod up/down to get the correct 'reserve light' level?

Iv been reading a thread where there's been cases of only getting small amounts of fuel in the tank when filling up compared to what it 'should' be.

So it got me thinking, when I swap my tanks round when I get it back I'm planning on using the fuel that's left in my tank now to swill out the new one to get all the dust and crap out before I connect it up.

If I was to put a small amount of fuel in (enough so the reserve light is off) ride it until the light comes on, make a note, then ride it untill it conks out (obviously ill have a spare litre bottle of fuel in my rucksack) this will tell me how far my reserve range will be but, will it be bad for sucking up any bits of crap I can't get out when swilling it out?

Cleaning the tank out is a must .
There should be a filter inside that connects to the tap , is it has a tap lol
If I was you when the tank was fitted I would fill a can up 1 gallon , then with you sitting on the bike with the ignition on (so the fuel light is on not the engine )
Pore it in until the light turns off .
That will tell you how big the reserve is . You should get 35 miles to a gallon on the vtr .

Cheers Lloydie I'll do that. I'll have to use the filter on my current tap as there's nothing on the new tank, just the shell of a tank. Stinks inside as if it been stored a while....

Good advice there Lloydie  Give the tank a swill out before attaching the petcock, float or anything as well.

If your picking it up today it may be best to leave it a while, maybe a week, before fitting it to give the paint and lacquer more time to harden off. Also before you fit it to the bike, give it a good coating of wax and polish to help protect it.

Nice1 mate will do, he's going to stick it it in their oven after lacquering to help harden it all too.

Seems like ages this idea started don't it lol :-(

Patience and prep is the key to a good paint job. I'm slightly lacking the patience with my panels I'm spraying. I put the decals on yesterday and now I'm putting as many coats of lacquer on as possible. But I'm rushing it as iv's only been only been doing it a week and should have left a week before starting the lacquer. Once it's all done though I will leave it a week before apply any rubbing compound and polish. Give it all plenty of time to harden. Unfortunately I don't have the benefit of an oven.

I'll get some pics up over the weekend.
