CCT Stopper Mod - parts required?

Post by Rob »

After 10 years and 25K miles on normal CCT's I think it's about time I did this

My bike was running great today so the last thing I want is a CCT failure now.

I'll use this guide, seem straightforward enough. Thank you sirch345.

http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=8326

Parts I know I need:-

1. Timing hole plugs - my large one won't come out so I'll have to destroy it getting it out. Hopefully gl_s_r still has a set that I can buy.
2. Locking tool. I can make that using the diagram in the Workshop manual.
3. 8mm bar for the stopper.

Parts I may need:-

1. CCT gaskets?
2. Cam cover gasket?
3. Tools - I have a pretty good set and can't think of anything exotic I might need.

I prefer the stopper mod as it still allows the tensioner to move and do it's job. Having never seen one apart can anyone explain how it works and how the stopper mod helps but still lets it work normally?

I have done some searching but if you search for stopper mod you get over 530 matches. Don't really want to trawl through all that when I know there are plenty of you who can quickly answer my questions

Cheers,

Rob.

CCT gaskets you could re-new but liquid gasket seal is just as good and saves you having to scrape the old paper gasket off. Cam cover gasket is rubber and does not need replacing unless it's broken and be careful not to overtighten the bolts back up on the cover as they snap easily. And there are no specialist tools required for the job. And here a recent thread with pics and some good explanations as I was querying things recently http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... it=stopper

Hope that helps

What Carl said

No new gaskets needed, just use gasket compound on the CCT

Tools that will be useful are a vernier gauge, and a small parallel punch to knock the pin out, but tony has said he used the pin off a pop rivet as a punch so that could work.

If you need either of these you can borrow mine.

How does it work.....it limits how far the plunger can retract if the spring fails, so the chain will go a little bit slack and rattle, but it can't move far enough back to let the chain have enough slack to jump teeth on the sprocket

Thanks gents. I would have put money on you two answering

Once they are out I'll take them to work where we have pin punches and I'm sure I can find some 8mm bar as well.

Not sure about a vernier at work but I'll buy one, they are pretty cheap and a useful tool to have around.

So after backing off 1/4-1/2 a turn the bar has to be cut to fill the remaining space? Then when back on and unlocked that leaves a little clearance.

This just seems to easy to do to avert an tp end rebuild. Honda must have some pretty clever people, why couldn't they have made a replacement part along these lines?

Actually you don't need to answer that, I worked in the automotive industry for years and doing that would be admitting there was a problem something they all hate to do, especially the Japanese.

Oh and Al, thanks for the tip today about gasket compound one side the gasket, oil the other. Simple but brilliant

Rob, Remember you can only take one out at a time, so you need to measure and modify the rear one then refitting before you can rotate the crank to the position to remove the front, so it is better if you can take the tools home from work and then do them both at home.

Doh! Of course, I read through the instructions carefully so that was a pretty stupid thing to say. No problem, I can bring the tools home or take them to work individually. There's going to be plenty of crap weather soon so no need to rush the job.

Decided to tackle the timing hole plug today in preperation. I must admit I hadn't been looking forward to it. Small one came out no problem.

Hammer, chisel, center punch and 20 minutes later the big one was out. God knows why it's so hard to get out as once it moved it came out by hand, and they couldn't have tightened it too much or they would have knackered it.

Did it without taking the generator cover off which I'm pleased about, as I've just put it back on with a new gasket after fitting the lightened flywheel.

Ordered a cheap replacement £3.50 delivered that will hopefully do the job until gl_s_r gets time to make some more Ti ones

Just waiting for a couple more bits as it will be easier to do a few jobs at the same time.

Good luck with the CCT job Rob, at least you're getting the bike prepared before you start
