Wheels & tyres
Wheels & tyres
I've been thinking about getting my wheels black powder coated (from the grey/silver).
So I need a new rear tyre and kinda a new front (could get away with keeping front but believe in keeping same front & back & don't want a new Pirelli Diablo rear), so I'm going for the much talked about Pilot Road 3s.
My local bike shop is supply/fitting the tyres for £260 - me taking wheels in. There's an 'engineering' firm just down the road from said bike shop who's owner, Tim does powder coating. He is going to do my wheels for £50 each. The good thing is these guys know each other so can pass wheels on when they've finished their bit (tyres off-powdering-tyres on) so this makes it easier as I'm working away at moment.
I'm looking forward to seeing them painted & some new rubber on them!!!
I'll post pics when done! I'm thinking of yellow wheel stripes on the black rims!? I had them on the grey rims and improved the look!

Re: Wheels & tyres
I don't generally like to mix tyres but I've just had a Metzler Z8 on the front and kept the Pirelli Angel ST on the back.
I do a lot of miles commuting so couldn't bin a perfectly good tyre. 1300 miles later and no problems wet or dry.
PR3's get great reviews, I went for the Metzler as I read a couple of reviews that it's marginally better in the wet and should last longer than PR3's. I just like to be different, most people I know are going for PR3's.
Have to say I loved the Angel's. 9.9K from the front, 5.4K from first rear and now with a different and longer commute I'm up to about 5.8K from the rear with a fair bit of life left, though it is squaring off a bit. Never had a moment with them, always firmly planted.
Really depends on how you ride and in what conditions.

Re: Wheels & tyres
Got wheels & tyres back today-lovely black wheels & pilot road 3s.
First time I have taken wheels off then discs, rear sprocket aswell. Great to do, obviously easy to most hardy bikers/techs but I had to take my time & consult my trusty Haynes!
So fitting went ok, but front spacers had to go in opposite way to Haynes instruction-it says large spacer on right, small on left but that did not fit right, though other way round did- all I can think is bike shop put bearings in (assuming they make the difference with gaps) the opposite way round? Fits perfect now.
Was paranoid about correct direction of turn for tyre & discs (helps putting discs on angling outwards not inwards, but I won't mention that!!).
Anyway, an evening job well done. A bedding in ride tomorrow I think. A lot has moved, changed so ill be real careful.

Please triple check that everything is in the right way and the right way round and correctly torqued up to spec before taking it out for a ride.

Re: Wheels & tyres
Cheers Wicky.i did the walk away, have a think (put youngest to bed) then look again kind of routine but large spacer on right hand side is definitely wrong with mine as the tyre rubbed against the mudguard. I thought (as I was quite proficient with wheel off/on routine by now (discs inwards gaff)) ill try the spacers swapped around and the gap is perfect - proven by calipers fitting perfectly.
Or, possibly Haynes has got this wrong? Can you confirm which side your widest spacer is?
...and im definitely referring to right hand side as you look forward!!!!!
Edit- just looking at your posted pic above; difficult to confirm spacer side-the left hand side one looks large but the right hand side one is obscured by the smaller pic.

Re: Wheels & tyres
Its done, loving it!!

I love it.
I havent got to the bottom of the spacers being the other way around as after attempting to fit 'correct' way, (right side with widest spacer) the geometry of the forks & callipers doesnt work.
All I can think is that the bearings are in the wrong side or tyre put on wrong way (havent had a close look as been away with bike, for work-bad weather & dark when I have spare time). Mmmm, ill investigate more Sunday, whip wheel off and see again.

Re: Wheels & tyres
This is strange - take a few close up pics when you put it back together and someone can then confirm everything is ok. Hopefully

Re: Wheels & tyres
I'm getting a bit concerned about this cause you can't be riding a bike where the wheels not on correctly. I'm wondering whether it's the right size spacer. We need someone to measure the a spacer for you with a micrometer so you can compare. I would take my front wheel off but I need a headstock stand.havent got to the bottom of the spacers being the other way around as after attempting to fit 'correct' way, (right side with widest spacer) the geometry of the forks & callipers doesnt work.

With regards to the Tyre it will have a directional arrow marked on the sidewall, so tyre shops don't fit them the wrong way around. But this should not affect the bearings or spacer either way. Like Rob said, get some pics up.

Re: Wheels & tyres
Looks to me your front wheel is on the wrong way around !!!!
The spoke patten should be the same as the rear

Re: Wheels & tyres
Good spot. I know the tyre direction is forward so tyres must have been installed in
wrong direction. I'll have a look when I'm back on sun & take back to bike shop Monday. Ta! Griff.
I believe there is a wheel direction mark aswell-though the spokes angle is the giveaway!

Re: Wheels & tyres
On the OEM disks there are arrow marks indicating rolling direction - ride safe! and get them to rebalance the wheel & tire if they have to take it off to turn around.
