Hi Guys,

Firstly i wanted to say thanks to everyone for their help. This forum has offered me so much help over the past couple of weeks and been so friendly!!!!

a few cleaning questions:

Im about to give my bike an anal clean before she goes to have the new parts fitted and work done! Im using gunk degreaser and wanted to know if this was safe to use on the brake calipers? (its the brush on type)

I also have loads of small black specs on the rough parts of my frame, front engine casings and rear footpegs. No matter how much de-greaser, warm water and elbow greese i throw at them they wont come off and have been there since winter! Any ideas?

The things that look like oil lines have gone all furry? is there a way to clean these up or is it possible to fit these type of braided cool looking hose things on there?

Hi Squiffy,if you use gunk on the callipers,mind you don't get any on the pads.I always use brake cleaner which comes in a spray tin,it takes the worst of the grime out and something like a toothbrush is handy to scrub at the stubborn bits(thats what I do anyways)
The black specs you talk about are impurities in the metal,mine has the same on the footrest hangers and to be honest I don't worry much about it,although I haven't got any on my frame.
As for the corrosion on the oil line,I'd just get a scouring pad or something and give it a good old rub,if it worries you then you could probably paint them with hammerite or something simular? its probably fair to say that all 'Storms over a couple of years old have signs of being used a bit.

what ever cleaning you do it will never be enough

can't help with the braided hoses,a bit worried about "anal cleaning" tho, does this mean you clean your bike with your elbow?

i use a de-greaser from hein gericke, comes in 5 litre container, i mix it with 50/50 water and spray it on using a garden pressure spray.
Paint brush gets it worked in real nice before hose pipe off.
Did use pressure hose but kept washing grease out of rear wheel bearings.
Wire wool is great for disc rims etc. & solvol on a sponge cuts out hard work.

Just don't get any brake cleaner on the aluminium or engine cases or paint work or plastic or rubber hoses or electrics or....I think you get the idea

Been using brake cleaner on all the aforementioned parts and never had any bother ? Maybe different chemicals ?

thanks for all the advice guys, the stuff worked a treat and i used a small paintbrush so that it didnt go anywhere it shouldnt!

Im not sure that the black bits are pitting tho, it looks more like ground in road crud??

Black bits might be road tar, usually a bitch to remove but not imposible, would think that most cleaners or even petrol might get it off eventually.

obvious warnings about using petrol near a hot engine though, lol.
