Clicking/metallic sound engine off

Post by Steve.Storm »

I was adjusting my chain earlier and when I took it off the paddock stand and leaned it on to the side stand I heard a "click" sound a bit like a relay click maybe more metallic in sound. I've not heard it before. I took the seat off and there is nothing loose under there. I stood side on to the bike and rocked it towards me and away from me and it clicked every time, it sounds like its coming from the rear shock and battery area. Any ideas what this might be?

it might be the chain touching the left hand exhaust link pipe . have a look there first

Or the chain guard catching where it goes into the front sprocket cover. Just push it back onto the swingarm bracket.

think you tightened the chain so tight that youve broke the swing arm pivot / rear engine mount. :Beer Popcorn:

I agree with Lloydie when I place my bike on the Abba stand, to service my chain. When I move the rear wheel forwards all is perfect, when I move it backwards the slack in the chain, which you do need will slap the link pipe. This is quite normal as all this slack is taken up when you sit on the bike.

Check the shock linkages for worn/collapsed bearings before riding it again, and that all of the shock mountings are properly tightened.
Otherwise, sidestand bracket bolts and switch.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Thanks for the quick replies guy, this site is great theres a wealth of knowledge here. :D

I have just checked again this time tilting it slower there's a deffinite double click when tilted one way then on the way back. I put a rag between the chain and link pipe so it's not that. Is checking the rear shock a long job?

It's a bit of a job http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 31&t=11809 you should at least take a look under there and make sure there is no visible damage. Maybe get someone to rock the bike for you while you listen down there. If you hear anything then it's worth investigating further.

it can be you will need to lift the rear off the ground .
check thats these no play in the suspension linkages and swing arm and shock bushes . the ones nearest the exhaust dry out and fook the bearings

Much to my relief that metallic clicking sound was two little bolts inside the sub frame, unscrewed a few things and tipped it upside down and they fell out. Whilst its all off the rear shock will get checked too. Now just need to get those sheared exhaust bolts out of my engine.

God, man, get some loud pipes on.
Those little noises will be history.
