H4 XENON WHITE 55W replacement bulbs

Post by rippedfromhell »

Hello Ladies and Gents,

I was wondering if I could get a little advice on these bulbs I just fitted to my storm:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120914042429? ... 5013wt_952

So they are not really that much brighter than the stock bulb but my main concern is, Although they are overall white they look multicolored from different angles :confused . I am wondering if anyone else has tried these bulbs and if anyone knows if they are legal for road use in UK Northern Ireland?

I emailed the seller who said that is the way they are meant to look ¬_¬
Anyway I just wanted a brighter (white) bulb as a direct replacement if anyone has any recommendations that would be cool.

Many thanks.

PS. I shall get a photo up to show the whole multicoloured madness shortly.

Plenty of threads on bulb replacements - look up 'eastern beaver kit' which is a way to significantly improvement efficiency

Thanks Wicky,

I seen those posts but none refer to the particular ones I have bought and whether they are legal so I thought a fresh post would be best.

I have read about those eastern beaver kits and they do sound good but for now all I am looking is a direct replacement bulb that is legal and brighter than my stock one.

Xenon bulbs are legal - it's the dodgy HID conversions that are naughty

http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=24081
overall white they look multicolored from different angles

white light appears multicoloured if it passes through different mediums i.e lens, water etc. hence rainbows

eastern beaver is the way to go, wouldsay my standard bulb is 30% brighter because its getting that much more current from the battery, the other advantage is that the wiring can handle more, so like Benny you could potentially fit a 100 90 bulb with the only concern being the heat given off by the bulb.

Thanks :D

I does say they are E-marked e-4 on the box, so I hope that means its cool for UK roads. Thanks to the picture in the Floyd video the rainbow effect kind of makes more sense  ...

I probably will invest in an eastern beaver kit down the road, as long as these bulbs don't land me penalty points for shooting out rainbows from my headlight in the meantime

Just fitted a Philips X-treme Vision Moto which is supposed to be 100% brighter than standard. (Moto is for bikes and withstands vibration better,)

http://www.philips.co.uk/c/motorbike%20 ... pp120-drp1

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/H4-PHILIPS-X- ... 1142594876

Not been out in the dark yet but it looks brighter and whiter than the Halfords 50% brighter I had before (Which was better than original)

Fitted an Eastern Beaver kit and measured the voltage at the bulb before and after and it made a small improvement. Will depend on how good your wiring/switch gear/connections are.

Not that it matters because light is more important, but increasing the voltage to the bulb will also decrease it's life.

If you find anything better let us know

Oh, and just a note on Xenon bulbs...
They still have a filament as they are halogen technology, but the gas gives the bulb a bluer color when lit. Xenon-filled halogen bulbs produce little or no more light output than standard halogen bulbs of the same wattage.

Cheers Rob,
Looks a lot better than the cheap ones I got. To be fair I actually really like the effect i'm just not convinced the cops over here will see it that way.
Do you think it would be worthwhile me getting that Philips one without having the eastern beaver kit installed? Does it scatter to white colour or does it have that mad rainbow effect also?

The Phillips extreme bulbs have come out top on a lot of independent reviews. As a direct replacement they have got to be one of the best on the market. I fitted some on my Fazer which has the same problem as the Storm, and it has improved things massively. It is a white light but if your facing them and catch them at the right angle (no not a right angle as in angles) it does have a slight Blue hue to it.

I think that Rainbow effect your getting has been done deliberately to catch other peoples attention. I'm not sure it actually improves your lighting/vision as much as other bulbs on the market.

Haven't actually used it in the dark yet as I said. Show us pics of what you mean if you can and I'll take some pics of mine to compare. At least it is definitely legal

Definitely worth fitting without the Eastern Beaver kit as it produces more light for the same power, so it should still be 100% brighter than the original. The relay kit would be a bonus on top of that.

If they are good at night I would stick with them if you use your headlight in the day (I don't personally) as they are quite eye-catching

Aye, I think I will order those Philips ones this week. Do you see what I mean by the rainbow effect with these ones? Do yous think it will cause any bother with the law using the ones I just fitted?
